upgradepkg and tar-1.13

If you run upgradepkg (actually it calls installpkg) and don't have tar-1.13 you get:

Code:
WARNING: pkgtools are unstable with tar > 1.13.
You should provide a "tar-1.13" in your $PATH.
I am trying to upgrade packages using tinycore Linux and currently have no way to compile tar-1.13. How unstable is installpkg with tar-1.29?

On the one hand the test package worked fine. On the other hand this is a mission critical computer (at least to me), so I don't want to mess it up.

I am upgrading from 32 bit to 64 bit packages if that matters.

Thanks for the link! It looks like the symbolic link "problem" has been solved by moving the links to doinst.sh... but it might still be unstable.

Sighhhhh... I didn't think it would be this hard to upgrade packages.

There's no need to compile it. Just grab the tar Slackware package and extract it. The tar-1.13 binary is in there.

I would be very leery about doing this. I think it is likely to break the system, as Slackware isn't designed to be able to be upgraded from 32bit to 64bit as is the case with pretty much all operating systems, not just Linux. I would *highly* recommend installing a fresh 64bit install. With this being a mission critical system, I wouldn't risk it.

I never thought of trying that! tar-1.13 is statically linked, so it worked even in tinycore.

It is easier for me to try to upgrade than to do a fresh install. I am doing everything I can to reduce chance of problems. I am going to do the upgrade from tinycore Linux so I am not upgrading a "live" system. I already have my own kernel running and am using syslinux rather than lilo. I know I will miss a few executables, but nothing that should stop the system from running.

Good luck. If you haven't seen it already, I would check out this wiki page detailing how someone upgraded 32bit Debian to 64bit. But it certainly isn't for the faint of heart. I would ensure you have a complete backup of your system so if anything gets hosed, you can restore it. It might also be wise to try this in a VM first. Install 32bit tinycore and then try and upgrade it to 64bit.

SUCCESS!

I am sure I have some bits and pieces to fixup... but it booted and the important functionality is working.

Thanks.
