Upgraded to KDE 4.8.2, can only open X as root

Hello Everyone,

Seems like everytime I try a major upgrade of KDE, I run into problems. I have encountered this one before, and the solution has always been to simply delete the .kde folder in my home directory. Not working this time.
Deleted the directory and still cannot open KDE as a regular user. X fails to start with the error:

Code:
failed to initialize core dvices
Then there is a series of errors indicating the keyboard is configured wrong (xkeynoard-config).

Logging in as root gets me into KDE, but sound devices don't work.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks for your help

Bob

Just a guess;
did you upgrade kde while in runlevel 3? I remember AlienBob recommending to logout of kde (even stop the X server) before upgrading kde. If you didn't, you may try to reinstall those packages while in runlevel 3.

Thanks for the reply, but yes I did do the upgrade in run level 3. I always boot into rue level 3 and then start X. I always do updates from run level 3. I thought I would investigate the Xauthority in my home directory. Seems like I remember something similar years ago after a KDE upgrade. Hope someone else chimes in. This is frustrating. The problem does not appear to be with KDE because XFCE will not open for my normal user either, but it also will starts as root.

The exact error is:
Quote:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler reports:
Error. Cannot close "/temp/server-0.xkm" properly (not enough space?)
Output file "/temp/server-0.xkm" removed
XKB: failed to compile keymap
Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect setup of XKEYBOARD-config
Fatal server error:
Failed to activate core devices.
Xinit: giving up
Xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
Xinit: server error
That is the only errors noted in the logs. I would just reinstall everything, but not sure how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

Bob

Kind regards

That's the odd thing. I dedicated 12GB to the root directory and it showing as 100% used. Is that possible? Root has never used more than 4GB in the past. Can't believe that the upgrade used 8GB. The /home directory is over 50GB.

Thanks for the reply

Perhaps you can see what is taking up the space.

Kind regards

Thanks repo, it was in fact and out of space problem. I couldn't believe I had used up 12GB of space, but as soon as I deleted the contents of /tmp, all was good.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Bob
