Upgraded kernel, udev takes FOREVER to initialize
I upgraded my kernel yesterday (2.6.12.3) from 2.4.26. Now whenever I start up, udev takes about 5 minutes to initialize. The first time I thought the kernel was broken so I restarted. The second time I just sat there and waited, and it finally finished. I thought it had to build something or other on the first run and then it would be fine, but every time since then it's taken just as long. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.

Do you use udev-58 or udev-62? have you compiled in the virtual fs by not compiling /dev?
All are my wild guesses, maybe one of them will solve your problem :D |
I'm really not familiar with udev. If it helps, I had a base Slack 10.0 install then upgraded just the kernel, so whatever udev that would result in. What do you mean by not compiling /dev? Thanks.

Is your /etc/rc.d/rc.udev executable ?
Also, is /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug executable too and have you a /sys dir ? You could use udevinfo -V to show udev version number |
I'll check on rc.udev. Yes to both of the others. I found a site that tells how to make Slackware more compatible with 2.6.x (http://xushi.co.uk/guides/kernel.php) which says to upgrade a few things. I'm going to put in udev-58. I'm going to reconfigure my kernel today. Is there anything that I could change to help this? Thanks.

Looks like Slackware 10.0 has 026 which looks like a long way off from 54 or 58. I'll see how the rebuild goes after the upgrades. Thanks.
