Upgrade to latest firefox unsuccessful...
I'm running Slackware64 13.1 on a machine and wanted to upgrade to the latest firefox, after getting constantly nagged.

The version I was running was 3.6.x I think.

I downloaded slackware64-current/slackware64/xap/mozilla-firefox-15.0.1-x86_64-1.txz and ran:

upgradepkg --install-new --verbose mozilla-firefox-15.0.1-x86_64-1.txz
When I execute firefox now in KDE I get the bouncy ball for a while, then it stops, and nothing.

a "ps auxww |grep firefox" reveals that it isn't running.

How can I fix this?

You installed firefox from -current. You need firefox for 13.1.

mozilla-firefox-3.6.28-i486-1_slack13.1.txz is the latest official firefox. You can try to build 15.0.1 from source with the slackbuild from -current.

temporary fix....
Okay I did a...

upgradepkg --install-new --verbose mozilla-firefox-3.6.28-x86_64-1_slack13.1.txz
And now I'm back where we started. FireFox is running fine again. I'll try building from the slackbuild you suggest and see if that yields any success.

I'm so glad there's a rollback I can usually count on in Slackware :)

I don`t know why you`re using install-new. That parameter has another purpose. You need to removepkg mozilla-firefox and then install the correct version. You copied the old mozilla over your mozilla from -current. Some unneeded files may still be present.

Hey thanks for that. I just may use one of those methods :)

In the meantime, I went ahead and built it from the slackbuild from -current on my own machine and that worked (sort of). Firefox has crashed a couple of times so I'm not sure how stable it really is. I'll disable a couple of plugins that might be causing that.

In the meantime, I'm having issues with strange rectangles appearing instead of the favicons in my bookmarks and in my tabs.

Here's an example

Some are showing up and some aren't. Strange. Any ideas on what would cause that?
