Updates applet

Hi everyone!

As I always do after I've been using a different distro for a while (mandriva in this case, which is quite good), I'm returning to slack again. Don't ask me to sum up the reasons. Slackware just feels more comfortable to me, and I feel more 'in control'.

One thing I'm looking for in Slackware is a nice little applet for my toolbar that warns me whenever there is an update available for packages I have installed (or just when there is news in the stable changelog), as I sometimes forget to check the changelog ( slackware.it only has an rss feed for -current and 11.0 (??) ).

Does anyone know of a tool like that?

Greetz,

MarsDude

I know about the slackware-security mailinglist, but not every package update is a security fix.

The closest thing I know of is slapt-get combined with GSlapt. That would give you a graphical update manager, but I don't believe it has a tray icon element.

I don't actually need an update manager. Just a notification applet would be sufficient. But I'll check it out if it has a tray icon. Thanx.

http://dev.slackware.it/rss/

This is the closest to one i know. It has the disadvantage of leaving out comments though. It only mentions package names for -current.

Yes I know (see my original post). But they only have an rss feed for -current and 11.0 (which is odd ofcource).

Well, you don't really need a stable RSS feed. It is pretty unusual for a stable Slackware release to have anything but security updates.

Looking at the 12.1 ChangeLog, it looks that out of 42 updates, 3 were bugfixes and 2 where the direct result of a security update (they needed to get recompiled against a new OpenSSL). It isn't the sort of thing that demands real-time monitoring.
