Updates and Oracle on Slack

I don't have slack ... yet. Two imporant questions.

Has anyone successfully installed Oracle 9i (Release 2) on Slackware 9.1? What about Slackware 9?

How are security updates handled? I really liked RedHat's up2date module - but RedHat is no longer going to support the desktop versions. Is there some sort of automation tool - or something even close to it?

Thanks,
Gary Allen

Security updates are always posted on the Slackware site here http://www.slackware.com/security/
You can also get E-mail notices of any security patches with installation instructions by signing up for the security mailing list here : http://www.slackware.com/lists/
Or you can use one of the Slackware upgrade scripts from Swaret http://www.swaret.org/index.php this is included in Slack 9.1 on the 2nd cd in the extra directory
or Slackpkg http://slackpkg.sourceforge.net/ also included with 9.1
or Slapt-get http://freshmeat.net/projects/slaptget/
I personally have only used Swaret (without any problems).
Can't help you with the Oracle question........

FWIW, Oracle recommends you use Red Hat (no word on Fedora last time I checked) and SuSE (United Linux too).
It's also true that Oracle tries not to be *extemely* current on kernel versions and other updates. So it may be worthwhile to try not to have the latest and greatest.
You could visit otn.oracle.com - its a developer site, and see if there is something there that will give you more specifics on slack and oracle.
