Updated ALSA: still no sound + more junk

I recently uninstalled ALSA(that came with slack10) because everytime I would run alsaconf, X wouldn't work after a reboot. After I replaced the packages that I had removed with the latest stable ALSA packages, the sound didn't work still. I did a restart and X worked fine but to my dismay there was not a sound to be heard. In addition to not having sound, since I unpacked the tars to my non-root desktop I found that I was also unable to remove the folders created from this process for some reason.

On a noob scale from 1 to 10 (10 being a complete noob) I am a 7. Keep this in mind if you can help.

hmmm... interestingly enough, that link didn't help. I did the manual compile and thats what brought me to my problems. Do I need to remove the individual files and folders and start over?
