Update from Plasma5 KDE-5_18.09 to KDE-5_18.10 killed sddm, Plasma
 

As the title says, I updated my "ktown" from 5_18.09 to 5_18.10, and now sddm doesn't start, and attempting to start KDE with startx yields a dialog that states:

Anyone else experience this? How do I restore my Plasma5?

I've run into this problem before, and the solution always lay in the deps/ section; one of the deps sddm/kdeinit5 depends on is outdated.

BTW, how did you upgrade your ktown from 18.09 to 18.10? Alien BOB hasn't updated his packages from 18.08, as far as I know.

I don't see any packages that are 18.09 or 18.10 in ktown latest for Slackware64 Current

There are a lot of packages that are "18.08.2." Maybe I'm missing something. :confused:

I believe the misconception lies in the KDE version number vs. the Applications version. Since they're so close together, I also believed I had missed an update or two.

So, to recap: KDE VERSION 5_18.10 contains Applications version 18.08.2. At least, that's my understanding of the versioning.

Exactly. There is no such thing anymore as "KDE" wrt software releases by the KDE community. It's Frameworks, Plasma and Applications now. Each with their own version numbering scheme and semi-independent release cycles.

For Slackware, I decided long ago, to aim for monthly updates of my packages and tag the whole bunch of Frameworks, Plasma and Applications with a Slackware-specific version "KDE-5_YY.MM" where YY and MM stand for the year and month of my package release. You have to consult my repository ChangeLog.txt to find out what exact KDE software component releases are contained in them.
