Up to date Flash player alternative for Slackware 14.2?
 

Where can I find a good up to date alternative to Flash player (which is also compatible with what Adobe Flash player uses), preferably one that functions INDEPENDENTLY of Adobe Flash player? I've tried "googling" for information, but everything that I've come up with so far is outdated and/or no longer supported :(. I use Firefox as my browser.

Your only option is to switch browsers.

I think it's possible to get the Chromium pepperflash plug-in to work on Firefox. I believe you need something called freshplayerplugin as well as pepperflash. I haven't installed this on Slackware before, but I see that freshplayerplugin at least is available at SBo, so maybe someone else can give further instructions.

Sorry, but I like the privacy features that Firefox offers. So what other options are there?

The freshplayer plugin will work with Firefox.
I downloaded it from SlackOnly and the pepperflash plugin from Alien Bob. Worked just fine.

Yes, reading the instructions in the README on SBo, it looks like the only potential confusing point is that you have to get pepperflash from somewhere other than SBo, either google-chrome in /extra or chromium-pepperflash-plugin from Alien Bob. Thanks for confirming.

Yes, I read that posy, but as I understand it, Chromium is an entirely different "beast", as it were, from Firefox, even though they are put out by the same company, and I don't want to haveto go through an the hassle of trying to install it - only to find out that it wouldn't work with Firefox anyway :(.

You don't need to install Chromium, just the pepperflash plugin from Alien Bob.

I run chromium for flash content. I also use Privoxy to filter advertisements and other unwanted content from chromium. My main browser is Firefox which is also proxied with privoxy. HTML5 seems to handle all the videos I view in Firefox. A few add-ons that help with privacy in both browsers are "HTTPS Everywhere", "Privacy Badger", and "No Script." I use flash for Netflix and Hulu- nothing else. So restricting my Flash usage to chromium isn't a concern.

I realize you do not want to switch from Firefox, but I have to agree with dugan. Chromium is far more superior to Firefox when it comes to flash.

One option that was not mentioned is Wine + Firefox + Flash. I've used this in the past with some difficulty, but it got the job done.

I have just tried this on my nice new 14.2 installation without success. Alien Bob's pepperflash installed correctly ( as one would expect from Alien Bob - so a big thanks to him ). The freshplayerplugin however does not install. It requires ragel which then fails because fig2dev is not installed.
Turns out fig2dev is part if WinFG. Of course there is no mention of this in the ragel description nor is there any Sbo package to install fig2dev.
Does anyone know how to install WinFG properly as I have tried their supplied install but Sbopkg doesn't find the package.

If Matteo Bernardini reads this perhaps he could explain why he is forcing me to corrupt my box with Windows software when none of the other packages I install need it.

This is an interesting thread. I've used AlienBob's pipelight-plugin for both flash and silverlight for over a year, because of a web-app that needs Silverlight 5.0 (this same company is only using .NET FRAMEWORK for development so I'm anxiously following Microsoft "opening" .NET core to test their desktop .NET application as this progresses. https://www.microsoft.com/net/download#core. It also makes me wonder what the impact on Mono development will be. But I'm off-topic...
Pipelight with Flash and Silverlight work great on hulu and YouTube. I use Pipelight with Pale Moon, Sea Monkey, Firefox, Qupzilla. It does not work with KDE's Konqueror, although Konqueror does support some Firefox extensions.
I primarily use Pale Moon because it is from a different web engine,Goanna, supports HTML5, and in my opinion is more secure than Firefox, especially when run with HTTPS Everywhere, uMatrix, and uBlock Origin.
If you are having trouble with freshplayer try the pipelight solution. It just works.

I was using Slackbuilds.org manually and with sbopkg.
The slackonly one installed with no problems.
How do I get Firefox to use it?
