Uninstalled Mandrake, Installed Slackware, still getting mandrake boot screen
 

Hello Everyone!

I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to read this post and hopefully reply to it. The issue is:

I was having issues with Mandrake 9.0, I decided that slackware sounded like a better idea. I then got slackware and rebooted the machine and booted from the CD. I went through the installation process, Deleted the old partitions, and then created
3 new ones.

8GB HD- Operating System Drive
30GB HD-Storage Drive (MP3's- FAT32)
PIII 866
ASUS P3V4X-Mainboard
Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO
512MB PC133
NIC-IBM I think
SoundBlaster-Sound Card


1st- Linux Boot 4GB
2nd-Swap 1GB
3rd- /home 3.something GB

Okay, I then installed slackware, Installation was smooth, rebooted and it tried to start Mandrake, Got the Mandrake boot selection screen, it defaults to linux and when it tried to boot it said that the kernel wasn't found. I kinda figured that since I deleted it. :)
I can't get Slackware to boot, I am still seeing the mandrake boot windows. From what I have read is to do a "fdisk /mbr" and the redo the LILO. That should make it boot into Slackware right? Also does Slackware boot into a GUI or just into a X prompt? Please if anyone out there could tell me if this will fix my issue or what i need to do to fix my issue i would greatly appreciate it.

Yes it should fix your LILO problem. From the looks of it you installed LILO on your boot partition whereas Mandrake installed it on the MBR,

Slackware by default boots to console mode. To start X (once you have configured it) just type "startx".

I went from Mandrake 8.1 to Slackware 8.1 a few months ago and had the same problem. I deleted all partitions (lost everything BTW), created new partitions, and reinstalled.

fdisk /mbr worked great for me. After partitioning and what not, you can set LILO up in the master boot record during the Slackware setup.

<disclaimer>
When I did it, I was not set up to dual boot with Windows so I wasn't concerned about messing anything up. If you're dual booting, you might want to ask some other dual booters before you start messing with the MBR to prevent problems.

Thanks everyone for the help. I am not setting up dual boot do screw the MBR :D I was able to get slackware loaded, it is working and stable. Now i have to figure out how to use it! Thanks again.
