I have installed Slackware 11.0 on a DELL Optiplex GX1 with the huge26.s kernel, selecting KDE as default window manager.
after running 'startx kde' at the prompt, all that I get is a black screen with a white window in the left top quarter of the display. Within is a prompt that reads 'bash3.1$'. However I am unable to type anything in.
What should I do to start KDE? I am VERY new to Linux and would appreciate any help.
If I'm getting the OP correctly he has X running, but not KDE. I'd suggest first trying to run startx without option and if that doesn't just solve it to check if kde has been installed properly. This could be done using pkgtool for example.
As for not being able to type in the white box, I'm assuming that your mouse cursor was not in the box. But that's kind a moot point considering you don't want the white box anyway. As others have said, just startx should suffice.
I am now able to start X and KDE loads properly.
However, I cannot move my mouse pointer.
In xorgconfig i selected PS/2 mouse (which it is), and default (/dev/mouse) for the mouse device location....
