unable to start KDE in Back Track 3
I installed BT3 on my hard disk. I get the login prompt at run level 3 and when I do a startx then the GUI starts with fluxbox winman. How can I invoke the KDE in the run level ?
thanks in advance nishith |

I have no idea what Back Track is, but in Slackware all you need do is run the xwmconfig utility to change your preferred X environment. If you run xwmconfig as root then the change will be global and modify the default X environment for all users.

BT is a slackware based security distro. That's why this post was in slackware forum. Anyway thanks for the help shall try that out.
BTW - won't startKDE in place of startx or something like kdm do the job ? thanks nishith |

The startkde script cannot be used separately but must be run from within the startx script. You can manually select the X environment from within KDM, but KDM is invoked from within run level 4 and not run run level 3. In Slackware the run level 3 solution is to run xwmconfig. If you want the flexibility of running either run level 3 or 4 at boot time, without fiddling with inittab all the time, then perhaps the following will help: Configuring Slackware for a GUI and a Command Line Startup |
thanks a ton.....for the input.
kdm worked for back track . In the meantime , I also tried out xwmconfig and it too seems to be a graceful method to change the GUI. BTW - I am a fedora user, so I had no idea of runlevel 4 being used. In fedora it is unused. thanks again nishith |
