Unable To Play Internet Radio

I have just installed Slackware 14.0, 32-bit. My desktop environment is KDE.

I have successfully installed Java (JDK 7u7) and Adobe Flash Player plugin 11.2.202.238. I used the scripts provided by SlackBuilds.com.

In theory, when launching Firefox (v. 16.0) and going to www.accuradio.com/, I should be able to play any of the radio channels. In practice, unfortunately, all I can see is the window on the left side that says "Loading...", no matter what radio channel I pick. SeaMonkey and Konqueror also do not work!

My speakers and audio card work just fine. I am able to play music CDs and I can even play Soma FM through the CLI.

Any suggestions about how to solve this problem? (Please refrain from suggesting that I should stay away from sites that use Flash Player etc. etc.!)

whansard 10-10-2012 10:27 PM

chrome has its own built in flash, if you want to try that.

Do you happen to have the package npapi-vlc installed?

camorri 10-11-2012 09:29 AM

I have Slack 14, 32 bit installed. I installed JKD 7u7 also. I also installed

VLC Web Plugin

File: libvlcplugin.so
I clicked the accuradio, and can play the links. Have a look at what audio plugins you have in Firefox.

about:plugins in the URL location bar.

stormtracknole 10-11-2012 10:21 AM

The vlc plugin can sometimes cause interference, especially when it's flash video/audio media. It prevents the actual libflash.so from working.

SlackBuilds.com offers Chromium 21.0.1180.90, but I don't think that Chromium it has Flash Player built-in like Chrome. Am I wrong?

andrew.46 10-11-2012 07:18 PM

Have you tried the older site?

http://old.accuradio.com/

frankbell 10-11-2012 09:10 PM

It works fine here with Firefox and Opera with flashplayer 11 on Slackware 14.0 and on Debian with Opera and Flashplayer 10.

Have you tested with other internet radio sites, such as shoutcast.com?

palsar 10-12-2012 05:25 AM

for listening radio on net i use the real player program...

frankbell 10-12-2012 08:01 PM

Just as an aside:

RealPlayer has discontinued Linux support, although legacy versions can be found here: https://player.helixcommunity.org/2005/downloads/ I keep a copy for listening to old time radio on this site, which streams *.ram files: http://www.otr.net/

RealPlayer is also for stations streaming in the proprietary real formats. Many stations and most "internet radio" stations stream *.mp3.

Yes, no luck...

Yes, I tested several Internet radio sites (they all require Flash Player!) with the same results...

tb75252 10-12-2012 11:08 PM

Well, I still have not had any luck in fixing this problem...

I first installed flash-player-plugin 11.2.202.238 (from SlackBuilds.com). Then I removed it and installed flash-player-plugin 11.2.202.243 (by Eric "Alien" Hameleers) but still no luck.

I know that my audio card is recognized because I can play music CDs, I can listen to music if I use the CLI and go to Soma FM, and also because I hear the music scale when KDE finishes to load.

I am absolutely sure that I have installed the correct flash-player-plugin! (i.e. 32-bit)

My desktop is quite old (approx. twelve years; it has a Pentium III 1100 MHz; 1.5 GB of RAM) but I think that I meet the minimum system requirements. I also have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed and I do not have any problem in playing Internet radio channels.

I did a full install of Slackware 14.0 without changing anything.

There must be some setting in Slackware that needs to be tweaked... But what??

Works OK here. Slackware 14.0 with Firefox 10.0.7 ESR, latest Flash.

Alien Bob 10-13-2012 04:44 AM

Works here as well, Slackware 14 64-bit multilib with Firefox 16.0.1 and latest flashplayer-plugin.

Eric

tb75252 10-13-2012 10:52 AM

So... given that it works for others, should I re-install Slackware 14.0? Maybe something went wrong during installation??
I really do not know what else to do and I am not exactly a Linux expert!

Marcelo_Belfalas 10-13-2012 11:24 AM

Well, as sugested, try google-chrome with the built-in flash...

Download the SlackBuild from extra

Ok, thanks, I will give it a try. I did download and install Chromium because that is what I was able to find at SlackBuilds.com. But then I discovered that Chromium does not come with built-in Flash Player...

tb75252 10-13-2012 05:35 PM

I have installed Google Chrome as per suggestions.

When I go to www.accuradio.com/ (or any other site that uses flash!) I get the following pop-up message:
Quote:

Could not load Shockwave Flash.
Any idea of what prevents Chrome from loading its built-in flash? Clearly there is something in my setup that prevents the standalone flash, or the one built-in in Chrome, to load...

Marcelo_Belfalas 10-13-2012 05:57 PM

This is a guess:

Try removing the flash plugin you installed from SlackBuilds.

Maybe it is conflicting with something.

frankbell 10-13-2012 08:11 PM

I have always just used the Flash player from Adobe: Download Adobe's *.tar.gz, decompress it, and, as root, copy libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/[whatever]/plugins.

allend 10-13-2012 08:50 PM

You can check your Flash Player configuration in KDE by System Settings -> Lost and Found -> Adobe Flash Player.
Perhaps you have Flash cookies disabled for this site?

Or as also suggested try the older site, there have been some flash related problems reported with the new site....

I did but still no luck. See my earlier reply (message #12).

There is no "Lost and Found" in my System Settings screen.

I have just tested your suggestion and unfortunately flash still does not work.

Can you see the movie below?

Code:

in Firefox 16 does list Shockwave Flash (I have installed flash-player-plugin 11.2.202.243). So, it so strange that flash is not working.

Try this:

copy flash-player-plugin into ~/.mozilla/plugins/

tb75252 10-17-2012 11:22 PM

I finally solved this problem!

Through trial and error, I have discovered that the most recent Adobe Flash Player version that works on my desktop is v. 11.1.102.63 (released Mar. 5, 2012). Anything more recent than that version does not work!

Could it be that newer flash player versions require more recent hardware to run? (My desktop is 12 years old!) I do not know. Perhaps somebody on this forum knows more details.

I am aware that using an old version of flash player is dangerous. But I am not going to avoid certain sites that require flash player. I will be as careful as possible! :-)

PS 1: I installed libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
PS 2: Older versions of Adobe Flash Player can be downloaded from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/...-versions.html
