udev sometimes does not create dev/hda3
 

Hi all,

I have just compiled kernel 2.6.15.1, which works fine, and thought I would use the new udev system from this link:- http://piterpunk.info02.com.br/extra/

So I followed to the letter the instructions on this and now when I boot my PC, ( a Packard Bell Laptop) then sometimes, not every time I get an error similar to this, but not logged anywhere, so done from memory:-

fsck /dev/hda3 does not exist, unable to check partiton
you will be dropped into maintenance mode. To continue to boot normally enter ctrl-d, or enter root password to enter maintenance mode.

So I enter maintenance mode, and fsck finds no errors on the drive. I am unable to disable udev from this mode as it seems to be read only. (probably due to the partition not existing in /dev)

Upon reboot, everything works fine.
If I now disable udev, I have no problems with booting every time, but re-enabling it brings back the intermittent boot problems.
Anyone come across this, or have any suggestions to improve matters.

I've been running udev for about 6 months now without experiencing the problems you describe. Do other partitions on the same drive still show up?

As have I without any issues. It is simply with this particular combination of kernel and udev 0.76. Using just hotplug is fine, using udev any other version is fine with this or any other 2.6.x kernel.
As for other partitions, my swap also does not show up (/dev/hda4)
Is this the price I pay for cutting edge?
As it happens, my PC has just booted first time with the troublesome combination without any errors at all, very strange.

I currently run udev-079. Have you tried that?

I've udev-064 (the current one) without any problems. Though my kernel is 2.6.15 :rolleyes:

Sometimes, cutting edge is not woth it. I don't generally get the latest and greatest. I wait for the kinks to get worked out. Try udev w/2.6.15....It may straighten you out
