Tweaks to improve streaming audio quality?

I'm a big fan of pandora.com, which streams via its own flash application. I also like some of the shoutcast stations. What I find is that most audio streams sound "skippy?". There are occasional lapses or skips in the sound, across several media players.

Now, no flames, please, but I tried Ubuntu for a bit, and I didn't notice these problems. Of course, I'm back to Slackware for obvious reasons but I'd like to get its audio working as well as Ubuntu's.

Are there global settings I can tweak with the sound system (Slackware 10.2--mostly current, alsa current) that might help?

Nick.

Okay, I used K/Control Center/Sound & Multimedia/Sound System/General and doubled the Skip Prevention/Sound Buffer setting. I'll try it for a bit and see if that does the trick.

Hmmm.. that didn't help at all; if anything, things are worse today. Maybe I just don't have the bandwidth for this?

instead of increasing it in general
look for a specific buffer setting
(eg xmms has the streaming buffer under
the configure options for libmpg123)

how much bandwidth are we talking about?
