tuxracer installation: cannot find SDL_mixer.h

I installed SDL_mixer from source and when I type the command "find / -name SDL_mixer.h" I found it as /usr/local/include/SDL/SDL_mixer.h. However, when I try to make tuxracer(./configure passed without problems), it told me that it didnt find SDL_mixer.h. I copied the SDL_mixer.h from the above dir to the dir "src" and the installation proceeded without problem.

Do I have to do this to settle the problem or is there a smarter way to solve this problem?

No. But is there a way to include the path to an environment variable(like $PATH) so that the library is available to other programs, too?
