Turn on power but no usb printer

Have been turning off power to my printer and leaving USB cord connected. I then click off the message saying no printer available.
There is at this point no printer showing when I lsusb.
Is there a way that will allow me to turn on power and throw a software switch of some sort to bring the printer to the attention of USB so I don't have to reboot or unplug/plug USB cord?

That's kind of a distro specific question, Nix. Which one are you running?

That would be Slackware 13.37. Sorry didn't think USB + Power = distro.

You technically disconnected the printer and delisted it. You'll have to either reboot (to restart the device management daemon) or unplug and replug it in to refresh the device listings.

On my systems I use a SATA removable drive bays. When I programmatically (a script) remove the drive from the lsscsi list, I have to manually recycle the drive bay power switch to have the system again see the drive.

Likewise with USB flash sticks. After the sticks are "Safely Removed," I have to unplug and reinsert the stick to have the system again recognize the device. Even Windows works that way.

Seems what you seek is an equivalent to wake-on-lan for USB devices?
