Trying to install XFCE 4
I d/l the slack 9.1 package of files from http://www.jeepster.org.uk/paks/ and unpackaged them.... found out I didn't run all the doinst.sh's like I should have so I redid that... now I get a couple of errors saying can't find libatk-1.0.so.0 I can't find ANY info on where this would be... I'm getting a vibe from searches that it's a gnome thing... I don't have gnome installed but I tried digging around in there and I can't find anything... I did install all the gnome Lib stuff but still nothing. What is this and where can I get it! I found it in some RPM's but the rpms complained about dependencies and wouldn't install :(
man linux is kicking my ASS! I want to install OpenOffice but I'm scared to death now!!! Thanks in advance, Bogus8 |
You need to have atk-1.4.0 installed, its on Slackware CD.
|
It seems you need to install atk - its on the first CD in L directory i think
|
THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!!
geez! I've been on IRC #linuxhelp on effnet for like 2 days asking about this and no one knows! I looked through all of the gnome stuff in the gnome dir but didn't realize it would be in the L dir.... why does XFCE depend on another windows manager to be installed for it to work? Technically aren't the sort of in competition... I know they work together if you want but the point for me is not to have bloated gnome installed... now I might as well after all the gnome stuff I've installed ;) Thanks again!!! Let's hope it runs now! |
Ok now it's giving me this!!
xfce-mcs-manager: error while loading shared libraries: libiconv.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory xfwm4: error while loading shared libraries: libiconv.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory xftaskbar4: error while loading shared libraries: libiconv.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory xfce4-panel: error while loading shared libraries: libxml2.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory argh! why doesn't xfce's web page tell you what libraries you need to have installed! |
Found the libxml2.so.2!!!
But I have no idea what the iconv is! I know I have a util called iconv on the system but no libs. |
why don't u just get xfce4 using swaret(www.swaret.org) - extremely easy, no funny dependency errors at all...
|
well this is a general question I have now... how would I go about "uninstalling" everything that got tucked away with unpacking the tarballs?
|
Quote:
swaret didn't help ONE bit exept to tell me that it was a problem  Thanks though I do like the concept of swaret, and I reallized I wasn't using slackware packages correctly and that will let me remove them also... and would have prevented my first few problems. |
|
Thanks I think... seems like a lions share of work.... granted I don't understand how to install this stuff... but i'm working on it!
*EDIT I got in XFCE4 !!! WOO HOO! Thanks to all I still don't think I installed that gnu stuff right I ended up cp the file to my /lib dir :D |
Hi,
This is what I did to install xfce : 'swaret --upgrade xfce' ... yup..thats it... hmm...it seems like u aren't installing slackware packages right : all u need to do to install slackware packages (.tgz) is 'installpkg nameofpackage.tgz' , as root ofcourse. U dont need to untar it and run doinst.sh or anything !! If u did the full instal of slack 9 or 9.1 there shudn't be much of a problem with dependenceis and stuff...I'm running slack 9, updated using swaret - and I don't remember having ANY problems or dependencies installing xfce4... |
Yeah I realized I was using the packages wrong :) I redid them the right way so I will have the logs of the install. I was installing xfce from fresh and I think it checks for iconv while compiling so whoever made that packages that I got must have had it... well I did learn a good bit from this install... and I like the fact that i can use swaret to find what dependencies are needed ... i'm trying to keep this a minimal install.
Thanks for all you guys help though!! |
