How are you trying to install i3? Are you using a slackbuild script from slackbuilds.org?

Yeah its a full install of slackware. i downloaded the ISO and then i pressed full install when prompted in the installer.

i was logged in as root and was trying to use a slackbuild script to install it.

It's not just a problem with pcre. The whole link is jiggered. I suspect something horrible is happening in i3's makefile:

'-L/usr/lib' is wrong for x86_64. However, the path to the compiler and linker is right for x86_64, and so are the flags '-O2 -fPIC'. And (for example) the libxcb-keysyms.so in /usr/lib64 is the right one, despite it being deemed 'incompatible' (which is the real problem for all those libs).

Have you installed multilib? It might be multilib which is causing the problem. I hope you haven't used /etc/profile.d/32dev.sh recently, or enabled it permanently.

i have used 32dev.sh. what do i need to reinstall? Skype is installed and working properly.

It doesnt really matter now, i went to another distribution that i like, crunchbang. But i would still like to know what was going on.
