Troubleshooting house freeze

Hi All,

I'm running kernel 3.9.6 on an otherwise stock Slackware64 14.0 (libdrm and xf86-video-intel are the versions from /testing).I've had a couple of mouse freezes (in KDE)-the cursor freezes and the buttons are unresponsive. These did not occur at all except with the 3.9 kernel. Has anyone else experienced this? What's the best way to identify the cause? I've had a look at the system log, the kernel log and the xorg log but can't see anything obvious (at least to me).

Hi,
I have experienced the same but on a VM, and only short 1s freeze. I have no idea if it the same (most probably not).
Can you please supply more details?
3.9.6 how? same .config as slack's?
How long are the freezes?
How often do you experience them?
How far between (fixed intervals?)
Is it both keyboard and mouse at the same time?
Do they occur elsewhere (xfce/other X thing)?

Thanks for the reply:-

The kernel uses the -current config-generic-3.9.5 with3 changes- cpu set to core2, kernel preemption and default cpufreq governor set to ondemand. I build packages using the kernel packaging slackbuild in source/k and install/upgrade as appropriate.

Permanent, as in only fixed by restarting x.

Only twice, but that's twice more than I've ever had on stock slackware, or with the 3.4.45 kernel compiled to the testing config. (The cpu is ivybridge so I need a minimum kernel of 3.4.

Interesting question. I don't really know but will keep an eye on this. I shutdown at night so this may be hard to judge.

No, just the mouse.

Haven't tried, but interestingly the exact same thing happened with the opensuse 12.3 live (kde) on the same machine.

I'm going to mark this thread as solved; I've upgraded to current (including 3.9.5 kernel) so would rather troubleshoot problems that affect the next release. It looks like the issue is affecting current too so I'll open a new thread.

I'm marking it as disappointing. I wanted to read about troubleshooting a house freeze, sounded really intriguing :-)

I experienced a freeze this morning just after upgrading to the 3.9.5 kernel. I run -current and use i3. I don't intend to try to dx anything unless it recurs, just thought I'd respond to the original question as to whether anyone else had a similar experience.
