The only component that utilizes a 2.6 kernel is Gnome-VFS, and it will revert to the standard mode if HAL is not enablled. HAL only starts if a 2.6 kernel is detected.
Several of our devs and testers actually use a 2.4 kernel still. We want to make it as friendly as possible for all users.

This is a good thing to know. The last time I used the dropline-installer it complained loudly about wanting 2.6
My personal experience with installing 2.6.10 was not all that bad - but my hardware is rather standard. Most problems were of my own making due to leaving options out of my kernel. But even so, i had a functional box and dropline installed in less than 3 hours. Not perfect mind you, but behaving well enough.
I eventually dropped back to 2.4 as I felt it worked better for me and my needs. I dumped dropline in the process. While I can understand PV's feelings regarding Gnome - I use KDE almost exclusively - I find that having a functional Gnome installation helps make certain GTK apps behave themselves better. As I plan on sticking with 2.4 for the forseable future, I shall try dropline again if and when Pat's Gnome becomes too broken to deal with - or disappears entirely.
