Total fallout while trying to install Beryl

Hey all,

I was using the guide at beryl's website, http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I...l_on_Slackware and now I can't get X back up and running. I looked, and startx isn't even around anymore.

I need to get Beryl installed and KDE back up and running, can anybody help me out?

P.S. I don't have "glxinfo" that the guide was talking about

I am using -current for the past week and I have had absolutely no problems with it. Today I installed Beryl and it's working great! I would like to get a couple other features going like those flaming menus/windows but overall everything is fine.
So, if you're really wanting to get it working, I can tell you that it installed on -current without problems. I am using the most current NVidia driver as well.

I would love to know how you did it, and if you used a how-to. If you did, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could link it to me

Sure. This link is to their Wiki installation for Slackware, although the one for -current is exactly the same. I have upgraded to -current which saved me the entire section regarding X11. Whether or not you upgrade is up to you but so far I cannot give you one reason not to. I'm really happy but I'll be much more hesitant to do regular swaret updates or anything like that.
The link to the Beryl installation guide is:
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I...l_on_Slackware
The FTP site I downloaded all of the current packages is:
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/slackware/slackware-current
and they're in the packages directory.
Be sure to read the CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT file if you go to current. The order of packages to install is specific in the beginning so it's a must-read.
Also, once you install the beryl packages you'll want to restart and to get it running, after KDE came up, I went to the "Run Command" and first ran 'beryl' and after that 'beryl-manager'. That's it. The icon comes up next to the clock and you can add themes. Blue Ray is what I'm using and it's cool!

I have to admit, this Beryl desktop is really cool! Once you get in installed, you'll love it!

I used that exact guide, and I must have done something wrong, because I ended up deleting my X server, startx, etc... Also the guide was a little foggy, it started referencing packages it didnt tell me to download.

If you have the time, could you post the guide, and show me if you actually used it or not? I have a geforce 7900GS

Thanks a lot for all the help!

Download the source from:
http://www.beryl-project.org/releases.php
I got all of the 0.2.1 packages.

As for that guide, since I'm using Slack -current (which only uses a 2.6.x kernel) and the recent NVIDIA driver (do you have that now?), here are the only steps I followed after downloading and installed those packages I just mentioned:
Configuration
[edit]
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Add the following to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Under section "Screen" add:
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"

Under section "Device" add:
Option "TripleBuffer" "true"

You will need to make sure xorg.conf references the new/correct paths for your fonts. Change it to something like the following:
Section "Files"
RgbPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/rgb"
ModulePath "/usr/X11/lib/xorg/modules"
FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/TTF"
FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/OTF"
FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
# FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/CID"
FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
FontPath "/usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
FontPath "/usr/local/share/fonts"
EndSection

I didn't use any packages. I installed the traditional .configure, make, make install way. So far, I have not installed the unsupported plugins...but I'm getting ready to now.

The driver I have I got back around... February? It is more recent then the one cited on this guide. Thanks a lot for this info, I only pray it start working now.

I'm going to assume that I should uninstall the beryl-related packages I put in now, then go gung-ho this route.

Here's hopin this is the magic trick that'll work!

I would, I guess, uninstall them but that might not be necessary. I would definitely suggest upgrading to -current unless you have some priority work you do that won't allow you.
Good luck. I think it should go just fine if you do what I said. It worked for me. Let me know how it goes.

Well, whenever it was complaining about a missing library, I updated it, until finally when i typed in beryl it gives me this output, ending in "Segmentation fault"

I can't copy it because whenever I type it, X crashes. I don't know what to do from here. Any Ideas?

First thing I see is a X11R6 in that error output. Have you installed the new X11 correctly? If so, you need to link all of your X11R6 correctly.
The only way I can really help is if you upgrade to Slack -current, only because that's what I'm using. It's a very easy process and I have not had any problems at all so I'm comfortable suggesting that. But if you want to stick with Slack 11, maybe I can help you in a day or two since I plan on trying Beryl on that too.
What resolution are you getting from your video card? And are you using the current release of X11?

OK, crud. While following that guide as best as I could, I managed to delete startx. I am having to use lynx right now. What package from that list do I need to reinstall to get startx back??

I still haven't been able to get back up and running yet. I reverted back to X11 6.9, but I still cannot get up and running. When I had X11 7.1, it didn't have a startx, and when I tried startkde, there were a million little things missing it needed.

After getting back to 6.9, This is the error I'm getting when I run startx:

Here's all I did when I tried to install everything:
-removed all the X11 packages, replaced them with the 7.1 versions. from right there, startx is gone.
-First tried packages, then downloaded the .bz2's and compiled them seperately.
-Had to get a lot of different things to get them to work, Pyrex, pgytool, random stuff I can't remember
-Finally gave up, and installed everything in the L and X groups from my install cd.
-reverted back to my old xorg.conf, a version that used to work fine.

Does this install really need that exact version of nVidia's driver? I have a more recent version, 9755, so I don't see why I should retrograde it.

I am desperate here. I want to get this running so bad, but I also need X to work period.
I don't know why when I follow these instructions to the T everything is going so wrong.
