Toshiba tecra 8200 WIFI card cofiguration

Hi

I am trying to connect to my router using the wireless card of my laptop instead of the usual cables. The lspci reports a toshiba wireless adaptor. Within the kernel, wireless section i added y to wireless functionality but no luck to find the proper driver for my wireless card. Since it is my first time trying to configure wifi i need some guidance to accomplish that. By the way the router automatically assigns the ip address. As usual slackware 10.2

regards

Hi,

First you stated a toshiba wireless adapter. What is the device specifications? Give us the system specifications along with the kernel used.

My crystal ball is cracked and even thing is cloudy!

If you post the following it would assist the troubleshooting;

Code:
#lspci -vv #verbose output
#dmesg |grep eth #see what was found at boot
#dmesg |grep wlan #ditto
#lsmod #loaded modules
#ifconfig -a #check eth
#iwconfig #what wlan
As for the dhcp. I would setup using static at this point. It is a lot easier to setup. Make sure that wep/wpa is disabled at this time. Once you get the connection then security can be turned back on.

*iwconfig doesn't exist

the wireless card is TopIC100 and somehow should be cofigured on
the kernel but i didnt find any relevant options in there. The signal is fully unprotected as you have requested

Solved

I have managed to configure my wireless card by doing the following steps

1) download from slackware.com and install each package like installpkg filename.tgz
wireless-tools-27-i486-2
pcmcia-cs-3.2.8-i486-1.tgz
kernel-modules-2.4.31-i486-1.tgz

2)load the module driver of the wireless card by typing
modprobe orinoco_cs

add the above command in the file /etc/rc.d/rc.modules for not doing it every time you boot your computer.

3) type ifconfig and iwconfig and check if you have been assigned a new interface and IP address. If there is no sign of IP address request one from the router by typing dhcpcd eth0 (or eth1 in your case)

You could add the dhcpcd eth0 line within /etc/rc.d/rc.local for the same reason as we added the previous command so next you boot Internet will be ready for you.
