It is important to distinguish GNU fdisk from M$ fdisk ;)
The later has bugs in it and is a bit obsoleted now.
GNU fdisk is more powerful and a bit more tedious to use than cfdisk. Both have no major bugs if any, so chances (and guilt) to destroy the partition table lay only on Your humble shoulders :) .

I just got my Toshiba A135-s2376 Laptop working with
ATI fglrx driver on a Slackware v12.0 (oldest packaged version! - SusE came from Slack - but changed to SYSV).
I also got the madwifi wireless atheros card to work and am communicating through the laptop via wireless at the San Diego Public Library. I am using the ati fglrx driver in 800x600 mode, and I want to use the 1024x768 mode.
I also setup with XFS fs and I recommend this - easy reliable, repair -thanks SGI!

Toshiba is not much help - but we are - we Toshiba and Slackware users! Much to do with the 2.6.21.5-smp (uniprocessor) kernel (just told u something important!

Reiserfs is also very good at self-repair too?
