toggling network interfaces

Forgive the stupid n00b questions - I'm coming to Slack from Ubuntu, and have been using it for all of about 2 days. For the record, I have Googled this stuff, but without a lot of success. (IOW, I found advice, but none of it worked)

My default interface is lo - not a problem, except when I need to activate eth0 - I'm not sure how to do that. I also travel all over the place, and need to be able to establish an ethernet connection without having to preconfigure a DHCP server or static IP.

For static:
Quote:
ifconfig eth0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx metric 1
For DHCP:
Quote:
dhcpcd eth0
Of course you'll need to be root when you do them.

The only caveat is that the dhcpcd demon will overwrite your /etc/resolv.conf file. When doing static, you'll need to edit it for proper DNS servers or use "dhcpcd -R eth0" to prevent dhcpcd from overwriting the file.

Cheers

Look at /etc/rc.d/inet1.conf, and change the 'dhcp="yes"'

If you just run 'netconfig', it will do the above for you.
