Tips/Pointers for home network

Hello everyone.

I'm getting cable internet next Friday and would like to set up my home network. I've got 2 machines to work with--my Slackware 8.1 box and my wife's Win95 box. I'd like to use my Slackbox as a firewall/gateway and have my wife's Winbox connect to my Slackbox.

I'm going to be buying 3 NICs for the setup: 2 for my box, and one for my wife's.

I am currently doing research on setting up the NICs in my Slackbox and on firewalling but any pointers or tips are always greatly appreciated.

Are there any special things I should pay attention to while setting up the NICs? Anyone have any experience setting up their Slackware box as a router? Since there's only going to be 2 machines on my network I'd rather not have to get a hub if I can avoid it.

I welcome any and all suggestions, pointers, tips, and links.

Thanks everyone.

I guess you will need dhcpd (most cable connections use DHCP). So one of the NICs (the one connected to the Internet) will use a dynamic address. The second one (connected to the second machine using crossover cable (important!) ) can have static IP. For example and
You should also have an iptables script. You need masquerading (to allow the second machine access the Net) and some firewalling rules. Such scripts were send to this forum many times, so just search.
