Thunderbird account creation wizard does not work for me. My provider has some sort of sub domains or something. Whatever the reason is, no Thunderbird account for me. I don't actually care what the problem is,because I have zero interest in that wizard.
I have found some workarounds, bits and pieces of information, but never a full procedure. So, here it is:
1. Close account creation dialog
2. Enable the menu bar by clicking on toolbar
3. Set Thunderbird to work offline (File/Offline/Go Offline)
4. Start account creation dialog. It will complain like hell, but ignore it
5. Skip Ghandi.net offer and chose "Use my existing account"
6. Fill the data into form fields
7. You can't complete the process, but you can press the "Advanced Configuration" button and good old account interface will pop up
That wizard is indeed very very annoying when it leave no easy ways to bypass it.
We cannot mark your post as useful, as I would like. Probably because it is the first in this thread. If you make a second post, quoting all text of the first, then the issue could be "solved" (quoted here because it is just an alternative solution).
Please submit a bug with your post, possibly detailing a few things a bit more.

You can "Add to askfor's reputation" by clicking of the third icon under the left column (looks like the balance scales). It won't show it on the post, but it will add to their reputation and it allows you to leave a comment.
It sounds strange, but Xsane's solution works for me only if I have, at least, one account created already. With no accounts it complains that account can't be verified. I tried to remove password, but it keeps insisting, nevertheless.
Even the USENET news account counts as "already have".
So, I guess, one could create a movemail account and add POP or IMAP later, following Xsane's procedure.
I have mozilla-thunderbird-52.1.0-i586-1_slack14.2, and matching 64-bit on the other machine.
----------------------------
I have created completely new system user, then "movemail" account and POP3 account after that, the wizard complained, but it worked.
Conclusion: This wizard is one really strange piece of software, when it can't verify your email provider. Long ago I've created some Outlook accounts. There was also a wizard of some sort, but it never got in the way. I can't avoid the idea that it has something to do with possible Ghandi.net sponsorship

By hovering the cursor in askfor's reputation stones, it says "reputation disabled". Does this mean "reputation zero" or is there a way to disable it?

Perhaps I need to enable something, but I have no idea how and where. I went to MyLQ and tried to access "User Control Panel", whatever that might be, but nothing happened. I guess that lowers my reputation.....

I'm not sure. My guess is that askfor has the "Show reputation level" option unchecked, so it won't display it to people on the forum, however, I believe adding to the reputation of their posts will still show for them under the My LQ link.

My guess is that you need to enable "Show reputation level" in Edit Options (it's the second checkbox down).
And I don't think there's any way to lower your reputation on the forum... only to add to it. But you can't do anything to your own reputation (other than hide it). It is based on what other people do for you... mainly clicking "yes" when you find posts helpful or clicking that little scale icon, which allows you to add a note that the person can see.

Something is wrong here. By the time I wrote "By hovering the cursor [...]", I already did give reputation to that first post and made a comment for it - do you see it somewhere? /-:
I do not remember doing anything to enable my reputation. I just received it and got a bit happy with that.

It allowed me to enable reputation. Title on the page suggests it is the "User Control Panel", sme one that I have not been able to access from MyLQ. Looks like it is a forum bug. Should we report it ?
