You can get your desired transparency with xfce4-terminal as well...
Actually it doesn't: that program only works with that newer over-complicated system of transparency that doesn't look as good and breaks several background-setting programs.
Unless you're running a really old version of xfce ... probably slackware 14.2 still has it.

Here I'm using 14.2 64-bit. Don't see the problem you're referring to. (xfce4-terminal version 0.6.3)
Window-maker's background setter works fine, as does feh, as does KDE's background setter.
Maybe current broke a few things on the way to getting better?
those 3399 are true speedesters among the ARMs - does it feel good as a desktop class PC?
Short answer is: Yes, I think it is viable as a general purpose desktop. However, I do not do video or audio editing typically, so YMMV.
My plan is to move to all ARM hardware quite soon. The Rock Pro runs just fine as a budget desktop replacement. Do I wish it was one of those Ryzen Thread Rippers? YES. But for what it is, it does the job I need done. My only complaint is the small amount of RAM available. I supplement my memory and swap on disk by using Zram swap spaces. My swap on disk rarely is written to as a result of how Zram is configured.

Is it time already we get one of those ARM SBC with ram expansion slots?
I know it can't straight replace an still somewhat current Core i box, but an Duron or Barton box would most likely struggle to keep up with that 3399 im certain - if nothing with USB options at least.
If we get an quad x72 core any time soon i might even jump the ship regarding Inkscape and Blender thanks to Slackbuilds and LQ build support?
My boxes (3 of them (don't ask)) currently run off LED power supply in cascade with an "PicoPSU" so i'm already half way there regarding noise
PS:
Thinking of it, a dual 3399 renerfarm with remote login quad x53 console might do the trick already
P.P.S.
watch for "ARMADA 8040" boards (MACCHIATO already there, but yikes $268/$368 price tag)

Reason: added PPS
