P.S. do the xorgsetup at the command line only. Not in your Desktop. |
how do i identify the version of Xorg? is there any command...
i've tried to do run xorgconfig before and after typing startx, the GUI doesn't start and there are some errors... and so i restore my old xorg.conf (as a backup) sorry i can't show the error messages right now, i'm not home right now i'm using a PC of someone else... i'll post my error messages later when i return at my home, so that you guys will have idea on my problem... thanks guys! |

P.S. if you have any custom settings, like for your mouse, they will be erased sort of, there will be a backup of the xorg.conf.bak as it were, so you can copy the settings from there. |

Thanks, your site and this thread have been a great help. Things don't work so smoothly over here as they do at your place but I'm getting there. |
thanks for this =)

nice contribution, I never heard of dropline gnome until today, maybe I'll try it.
I disagree with the kernel, I prefer doing it from source, and the nvidia driver is a bit different, maybe when I get back to my house on Sunday, I'll write up a little guide doing it how I would, which is quite different, some of the similarities, but if I used gnome, and I might try it, I would not install dropline full, I would only download gnome 2.10 packages, and the libraries, and maybe a few extra things. |

Even if things aren't listed in the GNOME desktop and platform FTP directories, there are dozens of dependencies that must be met in order to make things work properly. Occasionally there are also other less-likely points of failure. Evolution is technically a "GNOME component", and as such can be built to integrate with the GNOME clock applet. If you pull "evolution-data-server", then the clock applet has a tendancy to flip out. It's just the way it goes in regards to building a GNOME desktop that makes use of many of the potential features. Unlike KDE, most things in GNOME aren't very self-contained (I suspect that this is one reason why Pat felt it was a pain to deal with it). It's much more prone to breakage if something is yanked out from underneath it. :) |
Thanks shilo
Just a fast thank you. I have been using Linux (Fedora Core/SuSE) for 7 months. I loved the idea of fast/stable and knew that Slackware or Gentoo would be great. I just wasn't capable. So I just kept at google and these help sites. Got a little better at the command line. Here I am typing within my Slackware 10.1 current installation! Is that cool or what? I'm so proud of myself. The Slack Book is really helpful and so is this. So far, I reconfigured X and had the mouse problem, found your post and now I'm scrolling!
So far, sound is up, mouse is working, monitor is perfect. Tomorrow, I still have to get the printing/scanning going (HP PSC 1350 all-in-one), upgrade to 2.6 kernel, ATI drivers (yuk)! This is really fast and really cool. I still can't believe I did it. BTW--Is there a way to get a graphical login using grub. My Slackware entry is in my SuSE install?? |
To get to graphical login you've to change the runleve, the default is 3 (multiuser text-mode) and to get graphical you need 4.
Just edit the file /etc/inittab and set the line id:3:initdefault: to id:4:initdefault: |

Thanks. I really need to stop and think a bit first. I have edited inittab before. I appreciate you helping me. Done and now in graphical login. |
