Thinkpad Lenovo T61
Hi
I've got a problem with instalation slack 11 on my laptop thinkpad T61. 1.System crushed after I installed kernel modules package, so I'm guessing that it's some kind of incompatibility with some modules 2. wireless card doesn't work (Intel WiFi Link 4965 AGN ) Anyone can help me with that ? Thx |
Mind providing more info on #1, like what kernel you are using, and what modules you installed and how ?
Do you see your wireless card here: http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_p...randname=Intel If not, then you may need to use ndiswrapper, assuming that supports it. |
Hi
1. Kernel 2.6.18 with kernel modules from testing directory 2. No, there is no such card, i'll try ndiswrapper and we'll see 3. Could you give me some good links about trackpoint & touchpad thx |
That's strange. I don't see any reason for the system to mess up after you install kernel modules, as long as they were the right modules for the right kernel. Did you give you any error messages, or anything ?
For your card, see #72 here: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/j...,33/id,list_a/ is that your card, if so then ndiswrapper may just work. "Could you give me some good links about trackpoint & touchpad " What does that mean ? Your touchpad is not working ? Try 'xorgsetup', it may just detect it. Assuming you installed the kernel modules ... back to #1 ... |
Bad news:
http://www.klabs.be/~fpiat/linux/deb...nkpad_T61.html http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/lenovo.html Or maybe not: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T61 Probably you need this kernel http://www.emperorlinux.com/quality/value/kernel |
I just installed Slackware on a Thinkpad T60 - and every little detail works flawlessly. While I realize the T61 is slightly newer with later models, it's based mostly on Intel hardware which has excellent Linux support. Looking to Debian et al descriptions on what works and what doesn't is slightly misleading, as these guides normally only cover the basis of core debian, and not the full extend of Linux capabilities.
As for your kernel worries - have you tried booting a kernel that works (ie an old 2.4 for instance) to get started, and then use that as a basis for building your own from kernel.org? On my Lenovo Thinkpad T60 I run the latest 2.6.22rc5 because it has the mac80211 wireless stack build-in. Which brings me to your point number two. Visit http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/ and download iwlwifi and the firmware for your wireless card. It works very well indeed (except the LED isn't activated - big deal!). I have a SlackBuild for it that I can email you separately if you'd like. If you have specific problems with your T61 after following these steps, I suggest you report back with lspci -vv so we can see the hardware. Maybe I should also send you my kernel .config file that you can use as a basis for building your own kernel. Send me an email (yallaone account with google's email) if you want the SlackBuild and my kernel .config and we'll get you started with flawless Linux on your T61. PS. While on the subject of Slackware on T61 - Remember to use evdev drivers rather than the old mouse drivers in Xorg - works better with the TrackPoint! -y1 |
Hello again,
I just sent you my SlackBuild and kernel config on email as it's too big to fit in this forum. However, if you need further assistance, please continue using this thread so that others might participate and learn from it. Thanks, -y1 |
Hi
Thanks for help, I'm gettinng right on it. I'll let you know how it goes. Thx |
Hi
Well, something is wrong 1. alsa is working but there is no sound 2. iwconfig no wireless extension 3. F1, F2, F3,itp doesn't work on KDE 4. Can you post your xorg config Quote:
|
For sound, run either 'alsamixer' or 'aumix' and unmute the sound.
Did you install ndiswrapper as well as the intel driver for your wireless card ? What does '3. F1, F2, F3,itp doesn't work on KDE' mean ? If you have problems with xorg, run 'xorgsetup', it will likely generate a very good possible config ... with a little editing, it will become the best config. |
aumix doesn't help at all, and sound is unmuted.
That meens that I can't view or edit or copy anythind on "mc" for example, F1 - F5 dont work, xorgsetup doesn't make any better thx |
Looks like you've got plenty of 'unknown devices', I bet one of them is a sound card. Do you happen to know what sound card you have ?
And did you install the kernel modules ? |
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
Yes I did |
oh, there it is. Can you post the output of 'lsmod' (see if module is loaded). If it is, try running 'alsaconf'.

Hi here it is

Hi,
I'm not sure whether following method help or not. Please try to add options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad to your modprobe.conf. (reference) alsa-1.0.14 Documentation (ALSA-Configuration.txt) Code:
Module snd-hda-intel |
I wish to say that it helped, but it doesn't
Anyway thanks for an effort Thx |
Did you run 'alsaconf' ? The module seems to be loaded just fine.
|
Yes I did, maybe it's something with alsa drivers-1.0.11, I'll try to update to alsa-1.0.14a and we'll see.
What about wireless, still doesn't work, I'll give a shot ndiswrapper and iwlwifi from the source. Hope everything will be fine, but in the mean while any suggestions are more than welcome Thx |
Doesn't help at all, still no sound, anybody has any idea what is wrong.
thx |
Hi,
I don't know about the sound problem since the sound chip has changed from the T60 to T61. However, for the wireless network - which version of the kernel are you on? I can't see any of the required modules or information from the kernel .config I sent you - did you make a lot of changes? Did you get the SlackBuild I sent you to compile and did you install it properly? -y1 |
I beleive the sound chip is currently not supported in alsa as of yet.
This is what thinkwiki is reporting. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T61 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/AD1984 I'm sure that with the next release of alsa it should be supported. I do plan to buy this laptop as well. I just like the Thinkpad's for their build quality. I still use my 1996 Thinkpad 600. It's really slow to run X on but I mainly use it for ssh stuffand I don't mind it getting beat up. It's built like a tank and you can still get batteries for it. I beleive this was the firt model the was fully supported under linux from IBM. |
There seems to be a patch out there that adds support to this soumd chip. Let us now how this turns out.

I've browsed the 2.6.22rc6 source and the latest ALSA-package from alsa-project.org, and clearly must be missing something, because I fail to find where the reference to the Thinkpad T61/X61 are made. I'm afraid that the obvious answer is that I missed something fundamental, but since I just double-checked again it looks like I'll need some help tracking this one down :-) -y1 |
Hi,
ALSA-Configuration.txt is in alsa-driver-1.0.14/alsa-kernel/Documentation/ALSA-Configuration.txt And other related info is http://www.alsa-project.org/changes/...3--v1-0-14.txt Code:
Changelog between 1.0.13 and 1.0.14 releases |
Hi
I upgraded everything Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub (rev 0c) Code:
Module Size Used by |
Can you post the output from dmesg ?
Also - do you get any error messages when you run alsactl? PS. Did you get the other parts of your laptop working, such as the wireless card etc? -y1 |
Hi
Here is everuthing from dmesg (part 1) Code:
copy_e820_map() start: 00000000f0000000 size: 0000000004000000 end: 00000000f4000000 type: 2 |
And her e is part 2
Code:
RAMDISK driver initialized: 16 RAM disks of 16384K size 1024 blocksize "It turns out that the problem lies with the mixer. While there isn't aproper patch, I determined that constantly emitting a tone from the PCspeaker will at least allow the speakers to work (line-out will notwork, unfortunately). Read the comments in the attachment for more info. :) t61_audio_hack.py" Unfortunatlly that doesn't work Thanks for help and I hope we solve this problem rather soon than later Ps. No, I did not get wireless work s yet, still working on it |
I feel your pain. I have the T61 and have been wrestling with the sound and wireless both. I have the wireless working but it is buggy. Wpa_supplicant will not connect either but it will work with WEP. I upgraded to kernel 2.6.21 and used iwl4965 module and mac80211. For the sound, I installed latest ALSA to no avail. On a better note, the Nvidia video is awsome. For now I am using proxim(pcmcia) with madwifi driver for wifi. Better card anyway. If I should get more working I will post.

Actually you can get sound working pretty easily. Just download the source for the latest alsa driver (1.0.14) and then apply these 5 patches, as mentioned on the thinkwiki page for the AD1984 driver, in order:
http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa-kern...patch_analog.c http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa-kern...patch_analog.c http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa-kern...patch_analog.c http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa-kern...patch_analog.c http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa-kern...patch_analog.c If you don't know how to apply patches, you can just copy and paste these commands into a console in the working directory alsa-kernel/ under the alsa driver source directory: Code:
wget -O - http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa-kernel/raw-diff/ed48e4edc677/pci/hda/patch_analog.c | patch -p1 ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel; make; make install and you've got yourself a working snd_hda_intel module. |
Excuse my ignorance but where is the directory for patching

ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/drive...1.0.14.tar.bz2 Then you'll see that there's an alsa-kernel subdirectory in the extracted code, where you have to run those commands from. By the way, I realized that what I downloaded was the 1.0.14rc4 version of the driver, whereas they've now release 1.0.14. I only know the process I described above to work with 1.0.14rc4. I tried the newer driver, but for some reason with that module whenever I tried to access the audio device the process would freeze. |
I tried it but no go:cry: One thing that is starting to get on my goat is whenever I do a upgrade or kernel patch it hoses my nvidia driver & I have to reconpiled:scratch:
