100% agreed, and all the more reason to consider purchasing the official release. My personal philosophy is that it's A-OK to try as many distros as you like, but one you decide that a particular distro really suits your needs/preferences, to please consider buying the next release. Personally in my case, I have gravitated to Slackware and SuSE, and will be planning on buying the Slack v11.0 release once it's available. Please consider doing the same. It's great to support Slack on the LQ forums, but it means a lot more (seriously) to back up your support with a purchase. Just my 2 cents...,..

Agreed. I needed a new baseball cap so I went on-line on Sunday and bought the slackware baseball cap from the Slackware store, it looks good. I have gravitated towards Slackware and very much like Debian. I've installed FreeBSD 6.1, but, I'm a Unix novice.
Like you I'll be ordering the Slackware 11 CD set as soon as it is released.

I had a thought a couple of days ago that Slackware subscription holders should consider donating an additional $25 this year to the project. If you have a subscription, you usually pay $50 a year for two releases anyway. Since it looks like 2006 will probably be a one-release year, I'm sure Pat could use the extra support. He's probably kicking himself for not just releasing an incremental 2.4-based 10.3 about three or four months ago. As anticipated as 11.0 is, and with as much work as Pat is obviously putting into it, I say we owe him one.

Why do people think it's hard? There are the buttons, checkboxes etc. everything you have in the GUI installers. Instead of clicking with a mouse, you select the button with [Tab] and hit [Enter]. Does this make it so difficult and confusing ?

I also was thinking of getting something extra from the Slack Store. I already have a subscription for the CDs. Maybe I'll get a "serious" t-shirt this time (already have a "Got Slack?" t-shirt and a plush penguin ).

I tried Slackware when I was fairly new to linux, I sorta forget what the install was like, maybe I am over stating it's difficulty?
I have installed, Mepis, SuSe, PC-BSD [actually got to the point where I could install ports] plus a few other regualr type distros. I consider Gentoo, & Arch linux to be in a league of their own.

*I got pretty far into the install process with Arch, but never actually got it up & running.

I would assume that Mepis and SuSe would be easier for a Linux newbie to install. A Gui is most likely used, also the same for PC-BSD, which is supposed to be FreeBSD with a gui installer, instead of nurses. Gentoo and Slackware both use the ncurses(text) install. The installation of Slackware is pretty straight forward, but for reference, try this link: www.slackbook.org

Well, as sure as I sit here, I can say that both me and Mrs. Fogie are now slackware almost 99% of the time.
We're going to buy 11 when it comes out too. Maybe it's good 11 is a little delayed.
Money's really tight right now, maybe I'll have Mrs. Fogie make up some of her secret recipe brownies and mail them to Pat. I'm sure he needs energy food all these late nights trying to get 11 out.
We both here are really appreciative that Pat share's his baby with us in a truly self-less manner. It's just spectacular.

I'll take nurses any day! ;-) (Especially over gooey!)
Wow, this has been a really lively thread! And all I originally wanted to know was if there were any insiders who knew better than the rest of us if and when 11.0 was coming out!

Same here no gui install for me. Even when I install Centos I choose the text install over the graphic.
With the text it's clean and smooth.
Looks like Slackware 11 is really close. This round I'm going to support Pat and order myself I copy.
He has been working really hard on this release. I'm ok with the 1 year release date from one OS version to another. He is only one man ...humm and wife too. She compiles stuff for him as well.
