I'm doing 'slackpkg upgrade slackware' right now. Yay! New KDE release!

Unless you have already been upgrading regularly to current, go carefully with "slackpkg upgrade slackware" You might want to run the "clean" option first to get rid of any 3rd party apps. Also, if the kernel is upgraded, you need to run "lilo" afterwards. Check your blacklist too.

I think I am going to just wait for the new version instead of upgrading to current. Slackpkg is a good program for updating, but I use it mostly to upgrade patches of the stable branch.

As long as I:
* have aaalibs, alsa, kernel stuff, and lilo in the blacklist
* don't overwrite my config. files
* read the changelog just in case
it's not that dangerous, at least not any more dangerous than running -current.

edit: Oh, yeah, I didn't go striaght from 10.2 to today's -current. That probably would be a "no-no". I've been upgrading regularly since January-ish.

That is a bit low.

Might I remind you that the entire KDE project is created & maintained by unpaid volunteers?

If you don't like it, don't use it.

As far as I'm concerned, KDE is the only usable desktop available under Linux. And I have tried them all.

Well, I don't like gnome basically because I'm not used to it, but I can't accept that "KDE is the only usable desktop available under Linux". Lies.

I've almost always used KDE on linux but let me tell you that there are other fine options, as XFCE for example -- I use that when KDE is being compiled... like just one day ago

XFCE and Enlightment ain't gorgeus but just plain work, and faster than KDE that's for sure.

In case you missed it, there's an "As far as I'm concerned" at the start of that sentence. This means that whatever follows is an opinion. At no stage did I categorically state anything.

If other things work for you, fine, go and use them. For my purposes, nothing else is as complete, functional or capable as KDE.

And that's another opinion. Don't take it personally.

For the record, my opinions are based upon full-time Linux use since 1999.

slow down rkelsen
I was not taking personal neither. Actually I never do even if it feels so.
Peace.

For the record, I just plain love KDE too (so much that I like to compile everything myself every upgrade)

Note to self: Probably need to retake those english classes... though here I have a nice practicing anyway.

chill out ...

rkelsen,

From the LQ Rules you agreed to follow:
  • Challenge others' points of view and opinions, but do so respectfully and thoughtfully ... without insult and personal attack. Differing opinions is one of the things that make this site great.
Take a deep breath -- this entire website is only others opinions.

No one is out to get you, and some KDE developers are paid employees
of companies just so they can spend time working on KDE, and still
put food on the table. Same with the kernel, and most other apps you
use for Linux. That's why software from Adobe, for instance, has no
equivalent OSS replacement. Not enough money for development.

Do you think Linus still does this part-time as a college student?

As raska said ... peace.

I didn't think he was very insulting and gave no real impression of a personal attack... He was a bit sarcastic - but it was not a malicious thing. Neither do I think that constantly telling him he has an anger problem will help.

Lets not push this way out of proportion. It was a misunderstanding, nothing more.

Huh?

At what point have I attacked anyone?

Thanks mate.

Perhaps I should ease up on the sarcasm.

There isn't going to be a Slackware-11.0. So many changes in July,
he'll have to skip to Slackware-13.2; with kernel 2.99.6

You know the neat/cool thing about this thread? It is titled: "When will the next Slackware release arrive?"...It does not say "Slackware 11", or "11.1", just "next".

So does anybody know when Slackware 25 will come out? Will it use kernel 6.8? Does it have the auto-reload everything in 1.2 seconds feature? Will KDE actually work in this release? Did the dbus debacle ever get resolved? Will lm_sensors EVER work?

Just a few questions to stave off the masses asking later...

I'm waiting for Quantum Slackware... for when the quantum computer becomes popular. Since the quantum computer will be superior to any other machine ever made it will run everything perfectly for everyone all the time. It will use all IDEs regardless of whether they have been invented making Quantum Slackware capable of running anything at any time. All hardware will work perfectly at all times because it's a Quantum computer running Slackware. Yet through all the perfection it is still as customizable and Slackware-like as we know it now. This might not sound fun... but imagine the challenge of working with Quantum Slackware-current?

Of course this completely depends on whether the 9.8.23.15 kernel becomes stable...

Quantum Slackware exists today!
Slackware has always been a Quantum GNU/Linux Distribution.

Anyone familiar with Schrödinger's cat will immediately comprehend the concept of duality - how the cat can be both dead and alive at the same time.

The death of Slackware has been proclaimed often and loudly despite it being "teh" oldest and most "!337" of all things dead or dying.

And, just as the cat's dual existence is destroyed upon observation, so too is Slackware's upon "DistroWatching"

Praise Bob!
