The system has failed to boot several times
Hi,
Some days ago the computer at work refused to boot after BIOS initialization. Everyday now after rebooting a few times, the computer finally manages to boot. Today, i happened to notice the following message, at boot time: Quote:
Could you please help? Regards, Mario |

but as you are describing the thing, I suspect it hasn't much to do with the operating system... |
Check if you can get some input from this thread regarding setting kernel parameters for acpi, BIOS setting and more:

Hi Ponce,
Sorry if it took this long to reply. Here is the link in pastebin (thanks for the info): https://pastebin.com/DsuyZrQ7 Jostber, Thanks for your link. I will post here my /sbin/lspci -nnk output, If that helps in anyway: https://pastebin.com/bfPtnS4M Funny thing it has booted with no problem since yesterday. The only thing i have changed so far is my inittab from run level 4 to 3. |
It is possible you have a mangled system file somewhere preventing boot - I would not suspect that to be intermittent. I suspect a hardware issue. If BIOS comes up reliably, it might not be CPU or memory. I would run memtest for a few hours though to check the memory. Next is HD: SSD or mechanical? I've had some mechanical drives with issues on cold start up - platter took too long to spin up. Check SMART data for any failure codes.

It should be a hardware problem, as stated before by ponce, and since my working computer is an old machine which have had many "facelifts", that must be it. Will look into memtest and my HD. Thanks for the tips. PS: Whats worse is that i already got blamed for different hardware failure, all because i installed linux on my machine. Go figure... Regards, Mario |
A couple of more things you can check:
- Go into the BIOS and reset all standard settings to default - Run "powertop -r pow.html" as root and check the output of the report. You can also run "powertop --auto-tune" to set all the tunables to good settings |
