The problem about Xorg

Hi,

I just migrate from ubuntu to slackware recently, I installed slackware on my laptop (Acer Aspire V5-472G).

However, when I tried to start the X-windows, it gave me the fatal error: no screen(s) found.

so I followed the instructions from http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:har...hics_driversto install Nvidia video driver, and the package I used is from
http://slackbuilds.org/repository/14...nvidia-driver/
The installation is successful.

When I type the
Code:

lspci | egrep "VGA|3D"
, I got a list of two devices:
Quote:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK208M [GeForce GT 740M] (rev a1)
I think that indicate the two video cards were recognized correctly.

But when I typed startx again, system still gave me same error, here is the content in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log

So hopefully someone have any idea about what the problem is, looking forward your answer :)

If you are using nvidias drivers, you'll have more luck starting from an xorg conf generated by
Code:

# nvidia-xconfig
Try running that first, and then startx.

Also, with the slackbuild script, you might want to run after installing the package:
Code:

# nvidia-switch --install
Which replaces the mesa related libgGL for nvidia's version.

You have an Optimus setup, which contains a lower-powered, integrated Intel card for your basic video support, and a higher-powered, discrete nvidia card for better performance. This helps your battery life when you're not doing heavy graphics, but still provides you with the power when needed. Have a look at the following for more information on installing support into Slackware.

From that nvidia-driver page on slackbuilds.org:
Code:

This requires: libvdpau, nvidia-kernel
Did you install those two as well?

Don't ever do that. The xorg.conf that it creates is not right for Slackware.

This is one reason:

http://blog.tpa.me.uk/2010/04/09/con...-on-slackware/

There was another reason that I learned about recently, and which I don't recall right now.

The "10-nvidia.conf" file installed by the nvidia-kernel SlackBuild is the correct xorg configuration file for a Slackware system.

Also, if you want to use the "nvidia" module and the "nouveau" module is loaded (check with "lsmod | grep nouveau"), you might need to blacklist nouveau:
Code:

# echo "blacklist nouveau" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf
and reboot the machine or maybe just unload the module by running
Code:

# rmmod nouveau
instead of rebooting.

I don't want to confuse OP but my xorg.conf still contains the Input sections w/ nVidia installed drivers for years now. I have never seen a problem. What is supposed to be the problem? I understand nvidia doesn't understand HAL but so what? Isn't it just ignored then?

Richard Cranium 12-30-2014 03:18 AM

You don't really need it.

I don't have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. I've got two files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d:

nvidia.conf...
Code:

Section "Device"
    Identifier    "Device0"
    Driver        "nvidia"
    VendorName    "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName      "GeForce GT 640"
    BusID          "PCI:5:0:0"
EndSection

...and rat7.conf...
Code:

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "R.A.T."
MatchProduct "R.A.T.7|R.A.T.9"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Option "Buttons" "17"
Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 4 5 0 0 8 9 7 6 12 0 0 0 16 17"
Option "AutoReleaseButtons" "13 14 15"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
Option "YAxisMapping" "10 11"
EndSection

The system figures out everything else with no help from me.

Thank you, guys, for your reply

To coralfang and dugan,
I removed my old xorg.conf, then tried
Code:

# nvidia-xconfig
to get a new one, and I add the BusID manually, here is my new xorg.conf

And I found no file in the directory /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

to Alien Bob,
I have installed these two packages, since these two packages are the dependencies of nvidia-driver, so I think the installation would fail without them

to slacksam,
I removed nouveau by installing the xf86-video-nouveau-blacklist package from the “extra” directory of the Slackware version when I installed the nvidia driver, and when I type
Code:

lsmod | grep nouveau
it gave me nothing.

to enorbet,
The problem is I could not start the x-windows in my slackware system, I have to work in command line, but I need the graphic environment sometimes.

to Richard Cranium,
I removed my xorg.conf, afterwards I made the same nvidia.conf and rat7.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ but replace your VendorName and BusID by mine. However, I does not work neither, here is the /mnt/usb/Xorg.0.log:

to bassmadrigal,
I saw this article when I installed the driver of nvidia, I found it looks complicated so did not pay much attention on it. Now I think I need to look into it

Moreover, I used to remove Windows 8 which was pre-installed in my laptop and install slackware in this laptop with legacy motherboard and use lilo to boot up the system, I did not meet this problem. Only when I have restored the Windows 8 and want to make a dual system with UEFI motherboard and use elilo, I met this problem. So I am just wondering if the problem comes from UEFI or elilo?

That's telling you there's an error in that conf file - "MatchvicePath" which I'm pretty sure ought to be "MatchDevicePath" from Richard's example above.

In any case, that's for a gaming mouse, if I understand correctly, which is probably not applicable to you. So, I would remove the rat7.conf file.

ReaperX7 12-31-2014 08:27 AM

Whenever you remove and reinstall the nvidia drivers, make sure you run

Code:

ldconfig
each time.

The xorg.conf have or lack is a total myth. This myth is pure garbage at it's worst and is in long need of dying. Either having /etc/X11/xorg.conf or using /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/vga-10.conf (or similar named) works. The nvidia-xconfig utility writes the same generalized xorg.conf used by every system including Slackware.

cosmoswang 01-02-2015 03:06 PM

Hi all,

I still could not solve this problem, I am thinking about whether the problem comes from nomodeset option.

Because after the installation, even though the driver of Nvidia video card was not installed, but the intel integrated video card worked. However, in that case, I could not start X-windows neither.

Mr Marmmalade 01-02-2015 03:51 PM

I add "nouveau.modeset=0" into the kernel options in /etc/lilo.conf, then run lilo. I have an nVidia GFX card & an intel i5 CPU with integrated graphics in my desktop PC. Setting modeset=0 for your GPU 740 might be necessary too, although I'm not sure if your logs are saying it is already disabled, my /var/log/Xorg.0.log kernel boot line looks like this:
Code:

[    31.390] Kernel command line: auto BOOT_IMAGE=3.10.17 ro root=805 nouveau.modeset=0 vt.default_utf8=0

You do understand correctly and I do agree that the OP should remove the rat7.conf file if he doesn't have a Cyborg R.A.T. mouse.

cosmoswang 01-02-2015 04:15 PM

I use elilo to boot Slackware, and the kernel boot line in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks like this:
Code:

Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=dev000:\EFI\Slackware\vmlinuz  root=/dev/sda6 nomodeset vga=1024*768 ro ro
And as I said, when I removed windows 8 and installed slackware in Legacy motherboard and booted with lilo, everything worked perfectly, so I am wondering is there anything in elilo or the UEFI?
