Perhaps what you need to do is to open /etc/inittab with nano (or some other editor) and change the default runlevel so that slackware starts with terminal instead of the X graphical interface. Runlevel 4 starts X as default,
what you want is to start with a terminal interface runlevel 3. Maybe this fixes your problem because the laptop should be able to run the text-based terminal without the graphics driver.
Quote:
# These are the default runlevels in Slackware:
# 0 = halt
# 1 = single user mode
# 2 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
# 3 = multiuser mode (default Slackware runlevel)
# 4 = X11 with KDM/GDM/XDM (session managers)
# 5 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
# 6 = reboot
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)

I tried, this does not work for me too. My screen will became black during console booting stage.
Even if I add i915 into blacklist.

I want to disable nouveau because there are some display issues for me:
1. I can't change display resolution, have to use the default resolution 3840*2160, which make the text very small.
If I setting the display scale ratio, some controls can not work as normal.
2. The screen will be turned off if there some system notification occurred, then, I have to Ctrl+F1 change to console
mode and then Ctrl+F7 return to graphic mode.
However, I tested ubuntu 18.04 which use nvidia commercial driver, no such problem. So, Im eager to disable nouveau and
embrace the official driver.
Regards,

Nvidia has released their latest "long lived" driver, version 440.100.

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driv...x/160175/en-us

Edit in: Just installed the 440.100 driver along with the 5.7.6 kernel.
So far, so good.

Nvidia has also updated the 390.xx series with version 390.138.

Interesting. Glad to see an update to the legacy 390 driver. Interesting in that the 450.51 BETA driver also shows my card as supported. We shall see...

I have just updated and tested 440.100 in https://github.com/BrunoLafleur/Bumblebee-SlackBuilds
It should be merged soon with the master.

Thanks this version seems to be stable again.

I was having problems with Nvidia driver (not with nouveau) since the 5.4.44 kernel upgrades,
X session was freezing completely, keyboard and mouse frozen.
The only way to reboot safely was connecting through ssh.
I couldn't even kill X and all gui processes, just reboot.

ps- from Nvidia driver "Release Highlights"
Code:
Added a workaround for some Pascal based notebooks, where the GPU could fall off the bus when idle.
the driver indeed warns you when the GPU falls off the bus
Code:

I must thank you, Ryan, and others for keeping Bumblebee updated and working. I just refreshed my Bumblebee and was pleasantly surprised to see primus-vk and pvkrun added to it. I tried using pvkrun in place of primusrun for a few games on Steam I was having issues with and they are running great now. Thanks!

This Beta driver 450.51 did not work well for me under an updated 64-current and my rtx-2060 card and -latest Plasma5. Rolled back to 440.100 - no problems.

Patch needed for bbswitch with newer kernels

I had to apply the following patch to get bbswitch (from Bumblebee) to compile with newer kernels. (I'm using 5.7.6).

Oh wow I thought the 390 series was EOL, read somewhere that nvidia was no longer going to maintain it at all. My old GTX 560m-equipped laptop gets another round!
