FWIW:
The nouveau problem with the 5.14.y kernel, as described in post #3579, above, has finally been fixed in 5.14-rc3, which, so far, is running as it should. No coughs, sneezes or hiccups.

Year 2021, Round 50.
Another batch of updates has been scheduled for release on Wednesday, 28 July 2021, at approximately 15:00, GMT. If no problems are found while testing the release candidates, they might be available sometime on Tuesday (depending on your time zone).

There have been a few minor hiccups with the nouveau driver.
The panel across the bottom of the screen that is setup to be a translucent grey is now a solid black.
The screensaver settings have not been changed, but now it displays the default wallpaper.
When starting X (startx from the command line) the splash screen flashes by in a millisecond instead of staying on the screen while the desktop loads.
All minor items I can live with until Nvidia releases a new driver.
