If I had to guess as to why the quick release, it would be the first commit in the 5.4.5 change log,

r8169: add missing RX enabling for WoL on RTL8125

[ Upstream commit 00222d1394104f0fd6c01ca9f578afec9e0f148b ]

RTL8125 also requires to enable RX for WoL.

v2: add missing Fixes tag
Maybe not.

Which RTL8125 is a very common chipset for the Ethernet cards on PCI-express and sometimes embedded on motherboards, so I would put my bet also there.

If it's not off-topic, why do people here feel the need to have the absolutely latest kernel? Just a brief answer will suffice.

Brief answer: because it's fun.

Slightly longer answer: I don't actually update at each point release, just when I feel like I need to, but I do enjoy the process of upgrading, knowing I have the latest kernel, and seeing the new version number in the terminal. It's little more than that. However, if there's a very important security update of course I will move to that kernel. I'm still on 5.4.2 on my -current machine.

Usually I don't, but for a while I had this new laptop (Lenovo p73) which did not work with Slackware, and my best hope for getting it to work was a newer kernel.

Now that it's working, I'm a bit loathe to update its kernel again.

Other reasons: To help test prospective kernels for the next stable release, and to get better security patches for as-yet-unfixed hardware flaws (Spectre/Meltdown).
