The eDonkey network. Why can't I download from here?

The following URL:

[MODERATED]

gets the following message on my linux box (Slackware 14.0, Xfce 4.10, Seamonkey 2.12.1).

Code:

Unknown Protocol

ed2k is not a registered protocol.

The address specifies a protocol (e.g. wxyz://) the browser does not recognize, so the browser cannot properly connect to the site. Are you trying to access multimedia or other non-text services? Check the site for extra requirements. Some protocols may require third-party software or plugins before the browser can recognize them.

Any known workaround?

I would suggest you to read this (to begin with)...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDonkey_network

It'll give you an idea on what you're trying to do, and why it is not working, using your web browser.

I would suggest you to read this, the part about "Posts containing information about cracking, piracy, warez", to begin with: https://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/rules.html. Do you understand?

moisespedro 11-24-2014 07:58 AM

It is a link to Wikipedia. How harmful can that be?

MDKDIO 11-24-2014 08:48 AM

unSpawn was right about removing the link, it was a direct download link for "illegal material" (hence the removal + link to forum rules).

The only wikipedia link in this thread, is the one I posted earlier :)

moisespedro 11-24-2014 03:24 PM

Oh, my bad.

John VV 11-24-2014 04:13 PM

i would suspect that your isp is blocking the DEFAULT ports

as per almost every guide
use DIFFERENT ports
someplace in the 50,000 to 65,536 range

also BE AWARE
do NOT let a server change your "server.met" file
LOCK IT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!
most servers are ether PWN'ed by "the bad guys"
or ran by LEO's

so YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!
be EXTREMELY CAREFUL

It works here on Firefox and aMule. See if this link can help or give some clue.

Also WHY use a rather OLD version of seamonkey ?
2.12.1 was released in 2012
( 10-Sep-2012 )

it is 2YEARS out of date

the current is 2.30
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or...releases/2.30/
-- or if you want semonkey to convert the ftp to html

https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla....releases/2.30/
( "https EVERYWHERE" is now the default setting )

Hey, I have a doubt about seamonkey and I don't want to waste a thread on it. Is it safe to use the tarball from mozilla.org, instead of a slackware package? I'm on 13.37 and the seamonkey version is old. I can't/don't want to build it!
Thanks

John VV 11-29-2014 02:49 AM

i have been using the tar's ( and source build ) from mozilla since 2002
then mozilla was resurrected as Seamonkey once firefox started to become popular

the files in the ftp page are PREBUILT

i use the 64 bit build
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or.../2.30/contrib/

----- the 32 bit build is here
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or...30/linux-i686/
select your native language -- for USA English
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or...ux-i686/en-US/

now this will require the 64 bit plugins
say install to
"/opt/Seamonkey"
you need to link the "/usr/lib64/browser-plugins" folder to /opt/Seamonkey/plugins

BUT

the good news is
seamonkey should then inform you there is a update and install it automatically ( if you click on "yes" )
-- if not
click on "help" and then click on "check for update"

I don't find any installer on the tarball. I've been double-clicking on seamonkey binary directly on whatever path I've uncompressed it. Should I move the whole Seamonkey folder to /opt/Seamonkey ?

this is not a Microsoft program
there will be no "setup.exe" or "setup.msi"

did you read the instructions ?

Haha. I know, but you said 'say install to "/opt/Seamonkey" ' That's why I'm asking how to install. Maybe you mean decompress the tarball to /opt/Seamonkey?

forget lib64 stuff. I'm on 32

If you've run the slackpkg routine recently, you should have an updated SeaMonkey. No need to download it, it's part of Slackware by default.

I'm on slack 13.37. Seamonkey 2.3 is not there

brianL 11-29-2014 03:17 PM

Yeah, 2.17.1 seems to be the latest for 13.37.

open the archive
and copy the folder called "seamonkey"
to /opt

add /opt/seamonkey to the system $PATH
( that way the binary /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey can be found )
if there is a lib error you might have to add the seamonkey folder to the "LD_LIBRARY_PATH"

if the firefox ( yes firefox) plugins are not auto found then link the /usr/lib64/browser-plugins to the plugins folder in the seamonkey folder

Yes! Now I'm understanding.
Something like this would be ok? (after copying the folder, of course)
Code:

ln -s /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey /usr/bin/seamonkey
Or need the export command?

Please help me with this last issue.

Hi argentux. I mean this in a nice way...

John VV made a suggestion regarding $PATH. If you don't want to change your $PATH and want to use the symbolic link you suggested, you could simply try it and see if that link is all you need. You don't need to ask first.

It's good to try things. The computer is a great teacher, it will let you know when something works or doesn't work.

John VV 11-29-2014 06:56 PM

linking the binary to a file in the /usr/bin folder might cause problems

seamonkey needs to be able to find and use libraries in the /opt/seamonkey" folder

run it from the terminal and see if there ARE "segfault" or missing libraries errors

BUT

there is a way around that problem
link it instead to the SHELL script "run-mozilla.sh"

that script is one of the ways to launch the browser AND set system variables

or

make sure that the folder /opt/seamonkey IS in the system path

then if you type into a terminal( say from your HOME folder ) "seamonkey"
everything should be found

argentux 11-29-2014 07:08 PM

I'm a noob sry. I have to google now, but John was kindly helping me.

Edit. Will try John. Thanks a lot

Damm. Tread edition. I'm so noob.

Edited /etc/profile por the PATH variable, and works fine. Thanks guys. Tracy was right. The computer is a great teacher

TracyTiger 11-29-2014 07:28 PM

argentux, I didn't mean to interrupt the assistance John VV was providing. In your case you seemed familiar with ln, so it sounded like it would be straight forward for you to try your link idea and see if it works or not.

It's great that we have computers to work with. You don't have to guess if a program will compile or run, the computer will let you know. Why something doesn't work on a computer, however, is up to us to figure out. :)
