The Disc 1
One point I picked Slack was because it only 1 CD.
But then I really missed some packages.
So slackers, let's share which packages are deserved to be in the
disc 1 and propose it to Patrick.
Here is my opinion.
Must be in the disc 1.
===============
Kernel source : Please please please ... I bet 99% of us would recompile the kernel.
Relegate from Disc 1 to extra
==================
Abiword, KOffice, Dia : They are good, but not good enough
Games: Oh c'mon, leave toys in the extra.
GNOME: If one must go, then it would not be KDE
Netscape: Mozzila and Konqueror are enough
Emacs: Too old to be good, too big to be simple
T package: too old
Promote to Disc 1
===================
Open Office : This is essential for 'real work'

Since DVD-Burners aren't that far-spread
I don't think that's an option ... also, if this
were to come Pat probably wouldn't sell ANY
copies of Slack anymore.

I mean, if an individual were so inclined, he could make a bootable dvd with everything on it. ;-)
Yup!... The list mentionned aboved reflect the essential...
I mostly use XFCE4 right-now on my Slack9 (was using DropLine-Gnome before) and WE MUST have OpenOffice on the 1st CD...!
But if Gnome reside on the Extras, we must make it EASY to install... OR getting DropLine-Gnome on the extras???
Netscape is a, for me, "lost of space".. When most of us are using Mozilla...
Hope that XFCE3 will be replaced by XFCE4 in the next Slack!!!
I'm actually using Mozilla Firebird. It's a lot smaller (and faster) than Mozilla, and you are able to customize it a lot more. Maybe it ought to be included...
I don't feel OpenOffice is an essential in an OS. First of all its a fairly large package compared to maybe just a simple word processor like AbiWord.
If you got rid of Gnome, alot of peeps will be mad.
I do agree with installing the kernel source. Not sure why it can't be fit on the disc now really just by moving or removing some smaller obsolete packages that are not maintained as often any longer.
But you won't see Gnome taken off the list ever and many distro's still don't include OpenOffice yet, not just Slackware.
i do not see openoffice as essential either. abiword
suits my needs as well. including the kernel source is
a good idea though, since you'll need it to install
many packages (drivers, etc).
perhaps the dropline-installer could be included, since
it is a great way of installing a great build of gnome.
I'm a gnome user who wouldn't mind only having dropline on the cd, but a good number of gnome users, I imagine, will want to install gnome with a slow internet connection or without one at all. I think there are enough optional packages that could be cut from both gnome and kde to slim them down enough to put things like open office on the CD.
I think they should come out with a second CD. I know this is a pain for many of us, but Slack doesnt have any apt-like system,so you want as much as you can included.
Nowadays, 2 cds is really essential for all major software. I mean, they could just put OO.o , Kernel Source, and the /extras on it.
hm. i really like that it is only one cd though.. it's
a refreshing difference when comparing it with some
other distros such as redhat or suse which have 3+
cds...
