telling "make" where to search for libraries

Hello!
I am running Slackware Linux 11.0 with kernel 2.6.18.
Recently I have been trying to compile a package that has a lot of dependencies. After "configure" I run "make". "make" searches for libraries in /usr/lib. The libraries that it cannot find in /usr/lib are located in /usr/local/lib in my system. How shall I tell "make" to look for libraries in /usr/local/lib instead in /usr/lib?

I suppose some path should be passed to "configure" or to "make", but I don't know how.

Lib paths should he placed in /etc/ld.so.conf
Funny thing is when I just checked a reference system running slack (10.1.0) it allready had /usr/local/lib in it..... so they should have been found.

There must be a flaw in my thinking.

BTW
Usually all configuration for make is done via a configure script....
Try running ./configure --help
