ted.com on slackware.

Hi, everyone.

Recently, I began to subscribe ted.com, to enhance my listening skills (Yes, English is not my mother tongue :)

However, in vanilla Slackware, it is not able to see the clips on the ted.com site.

(I'm using firefox packaged in Slackware, of course).

I found that installing flash player can be a solution, but, as we know, flash player is quite deprecated in these days.

So, is there a way to play the clips from ted.com on Slackware? I really appreciate if I can.

Best regard,
sungjin.

What browser are you using? Have you tried Chromium? I'm not at my Slack setups at the moment but I seem to remember Flash working OOTB with Chromium. I'm sure someone else can confirm.

I am using Firefox (52.9.0 ESR as updated) shipped with Slackware as my web browser.

(I do not prefer installing another software besides Slackware packages, as far as I can).

Yes, I installed flash player from adobe.com and then verified the streaming from ted.com working, but I want, if possible, a solution without flash player.

Thank you for your concern.

Clips work here in FF without flash player. You might wanna install ffmpeg and retry.

Watching vids on ted.com is working for me (Firefox 60.1.0esr) and I have no Flash plugin enabled or even installed. Most streaming content sites have moved on to html5 so I have to wonder if that site even supports Flash any longer. Maybe try going to: https://html5test.com and check on your browser's various html5 capabilities.
Do you have similar problems watching video on other sites like Youtube or Vimeo, or is it just with ted?

I just installed Slackware64-14.2 in VirtualBox, having the same issue with Firefox (52.9.0 ESR as updated) shipped with Slackware. I solved this problem by installing ffmpeg from AlienBob. It has the codec needed to play.

You can download it from here: http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/peo...builds/ffmpeg/

To install it. Based on your install, from that link select:

Slackware-14.2 (32-bit)
pkg then 14.2 and download ffmpeg-3.4.2-i486-1alien.txz to a location of your choice.

Slackware64-14.2
pkg64 then 14.2 and download ffmpeg-3.4.2-x86_64-1alien.txz to a location of your choice.

From root run 'installpkg ffmpeg-3.4.2-x86_64-1alien.txz' or 'installpkg ffmpeg-3.4.2-i486-1alien.txz' depending on your choice above.

You will have to exit Firefox and start it again to get it to take. Now ted.com should work. Watching a video now on the VirtualBox install.

Edit: No flash player installed during this test.

Wiser heads than mine have suggested fixes for browser based viewing of the TED talks but I can suggest a more civilized way of viewing these talks: using an application such as gPodder?
