Tecra 8000 odd sound probs + 2.6.3 problems.

Greetings,

I've been pratting around with Slack 9.1 for a while and I've had some entertaining problems crop up, that are probably just me being a muppet but I figured I might as well ask :)

First off all, my system is a Toshiba Tecra 8000 (i.e. laptop) with a Neomagic gFX chip, 256Mb RAM, Pentium II - 300 and a Yamaha OPL3sa2 sound card. Normally I use an Intel NIC (with built in modem) that seems to happily use the Xircom driver and all is good.

Problems:

Kernel 2.4.22:-
Sound. ARGH! Now I know there is a 'gotcha' with the permission in /dev and I've changed these as per various messages on this board. ALSA behaves 'oddly'. It'll say it failed to find any card even when I manually select the OPL3sa2 driver and have it hunt for the card; however once it's completed firing up /etc/rc/rc.alsa and boom there is my sound card, all of the outputs are muted but once I've sorted that out I have sound both from shell and KDE via arts.
I've tried using the alsactl store command and it does appear to write the asound.state file.
Reboot and back to square one.

Kernel 2.6.3:-
Sound & PCMCIA are my main problems for this beast.
Too compile I use the .config from 2.4.22 and then run through both the text prompts and a menuconfig to make sure everything is 'ok'. Both PCMCIA & ALSA are turned on with all modules selected.
make bzImage , make modules make modules_install takes forever but completes fine. I then redo Lilo to let me boot both kernels.
Good so far I think?

Sound never quite makes it. ALSA detects nothing as per 2.4.22 but this time really means it! Complains that the OSS modules are loaded already and dies :-/

The PCMCIA system seems a little odd. I can see cardmgr is loading but it doesn't appear to notice when a card is present/inserted/ejected. With my every card I have in the machine (at one time or another) cardctl reports that the slots are unavliable/no information.

To be honest I'd quite like to get 2.6.3 working as I find it perkier with KDE 3.2. But getting the sound going in 2.4.22 would be more than sufficient for my needs.

Ideas and suggestions please :)
