Tearing effects when moving windows around in Slackware64 current
I installed Slackware64 current yesterday and I'm really impressed!

The only problem I've encountered so far, is that I get a tearing effect when moving windows around on the desktop - regardless of which video driver I'm using. It didn't happen in Slackware 12.2 or Slamd64 12.2.

"lspci" shows the following about my vido card:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]

I've tried using vesa, ati, radeon and the proprietary fglrx drivers, but they all have the same tearing effect. I have also tried with KDE, XFCE and fluxbox, but the problem is there in all cases. Could it be a problem with xorg? How can I troubleshoot this?

Is this something that is unique to my setup, or are others experiencing the same problem?

Yes, I think the issue is inherent too your setup and configuration. What driver did you use with 12.2? How did you have the system configured with 12.2?

Thank you for your reply :)

I used the 32-bit proprietary drivers (same version number) with Slackware 12.2 and configured it with ATI's configuration tool. I don't think it's related to the specific driver in use though, because I see the tearing effects when using the vesa drivers as well.

This happens to me to when rapidly moving windows. I have hd3200 (780g) and using catalyst-9.5 on a partition with slackware 12.2. As far as I can remember this has always happened.

I don't really see it as a problem though as I am not trying to interact with the window while moving it rapidly. Once I stop moving window the screen refreshes and all is well.

Is your screen staying torn? Maybe you could make custom kernel with low latency setting if it really bothers you. I've never used that but maybe it helps.

I don't have to move the windows at very high speeds to get the tearing effect. It seems to happen no matter how fast I move them. I tried compiling a low latency kernel, but it didn't really help. Since the windows don't stay torn, it's not a problem, but since it didn't happen to me before I switched to Slackware64, I was wondering if more people were experiencing it.

I believe your experiencing a inherent problem with 'ATI'.

Just reread your post. Catalyst (fglrx) not currently working with 64 bit, or at least not with the 2.6.29 kernel.

If you stick with 64 bit, you should probably try the latest xf86-video-ati (radeon) drivers. You might also need newer drm and mesa.

For 64 bit I'm currently using radeonhd and I don't think I'm getting the slower window movement (my guess) and tearing that you're probably talking about.
