Tar error

I'm just running a basic tar command to backup my entire harddrive to the tape. Here is the command I'm running.

Code:
tar cvf /dev/st0 /
and here is the only error I'm getting

Code:
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
Any ideas?

Are you sure you have the right device? Tape drives show as /dev/nst0 on my machines

How about adding the "-", e.g.

Code:
tar -cvf /dev/st0 /
?
