System Map

After compiling the kernel and moving the bzImage to my boot, if I am to move my Systeme.map and replace the one that is there, lilo doesn't boot, or does boot but my screen stays black.

Am I doing something wrong? My current config is the standard config that comes with installing lilo (to the exception of the drive locations). Nothing has be changed.

Is there something special I need to do to the system.map? Also, even if I delete the map and symlink System.map to the IDE default one, I get the same reaction, blank black screen.

As a matter of fact system.map has nothing to do with booting. You probably forgot to run /sbin/lilo after copying new kernel. It must be always done, even if you don't change kernel name and lilo configuration.

While on the subject of System.map... what is it, and is it necessary to have it in /boot?
