syslinux as a bootloader on a x86_64 nvme ssd?

i notice grub does not like a my kernel rebuild and wont give me a menu so i went back to trusty old lilo,

and i was searching google for all the bootloaders available for Linux and i notice syslinux which happens to be installed on slackware64-current, has anyone used it as their bootloader on a desktop PC?

and would this /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg work?

Code:
DEFAULT linux
SAY Now booting the kernel from SYSLINUX...
LABEL linux
KERNEL vmlinuz
APPEND ro root=/dev/nvme0n1p1 initrd=initrd.gz

i guess nobody knows? or is syslinux only installed for its various other tools, like isohybrid, and making bootable usb memsticks for recovery, i went ahead and tried it with first extlinux and then syslinux and it dont want to even touch the MBR,

i will stick with lilo, it seems to be more forgiving with my system and lilo boots my rebuilt kernel

what i have not figured out is why grub does not like my kernel build, all i did was get the kernel source from /k/ then run make localmodconfig, then menuconfig to make sure all is good, then built and installed the kernel, and grub acts like it is good but when i reboot it dont want to boot it, so i boot up using a usb stick and mount & chroot in and switch to lilo as a boot loader and lilo works good for me, que sera sera
