swaret... kde (and others) upgrade question..

all..

i have read a few threads on the upgrade using swaret.. some mention commenting out the excludes.. what is that about and do i comment out all (not kernel) or just a few.. i have one in there for kde-il8n.........why are there excludes in there so start.. would i want most things updated.upgraded??

i have also read some threads that were explaining horrors to using swaret to upgrade kde.. has that passed or do they still exist..

i also read about changing version?? why would i do that??

there were a lot of probs when people upgraded kde when there were some dependancy issues with XFree86 4.4.0. That has now passed. Just make sure that swaret does a dependancy check everytime. Also, if you upgrade a lot of programmes run

swaret --dep

just to be sure.

The excludes are by default the internationalisation stuff for KDE and KOffice, unless you use other languages than english you won't need to include these. Also the kernel and swaret itself are excluded by default, cos upgrading the kernel may be quite iffy using swaret. I'd never do it. A good place for info and help on swaret are Swaret.org and the Swaret Forums.

The only "problem" i had with swaret, is that i had to reinstall my NVIDIA drivers....
Some packages from linuxpackages.net are switching from a version to another each time i upgrade, so i've added'em in the exclude list.
KDE works fine, even if i use konqueror inside XFce .
Some people recommend to exclude kernel, lilo and swaret. Me too.
