swaret broke my gnome/gdm

last night i installed the new gnome 2.6 packages via swaret and i've been trying to fix it ever since. first thing i noticed is that gdm doesn't work now....it doesn't give any error messages, just the cursor stays as the little watch and nothing happens... then when i tried using kdm to log into gnome i would give me an error saying that it could not run the Gnome Settings Daemon...(i saw a lot of threads about that and noone could really figure out what was wrong....in my case i just needed to install the libxklavier package)..now that i've fixed that, it gets stuck while loading nautilus, and i have the latest version of nautilus. can any of you help? the main thing i want to work is gdm cuz i like it a lot more than kdm. i only use gnome for my mom's account, and she woudln't even know the difference if i just set her up on kde instead. i'd appreciate any help

Did you let swaret check for missing dependencies? swaret --dep

Hi,

I had the same problem with gdm. You could try to upgrading XFree to 4.4, re-run xwmconfig and gdm-conf.

Bye

I had the same problem when I tried to upgrade gnome using swaret.

Installed Mandrake 10. That seemed to solve it.

Nobody likes my jokes!

Seriously, upgrading gnome with swaret did break my gnome setup so I installed mdk 10 as I was wanting to see what it was like.

Yeah try snop's suggestion. Which version of slack are you running ? is it 9.1 out-of-the-box or current?

BTW there have been a few additions and deletions in the gnome package = see the change log to make sure that you have all the needed packages and delete those no longer available.

For me swaret --upgrade did not install the new packages (about 8 of them) so i downloaded and installed manually.

thanks for the input everyone, swaret --dep fixed the nautilus and gdm problem i had....after that was all settled, all my icons in gnome were messed up and had .desktop visible.....to anyone with that same problem, downloading shared-mime-info-0.14-i486-1.tgz should fix that.... thanks again

thrice, in case you didn't get this completely fixed, here's how I did it.

ran swaret --instal gnome and looked at the packages it said I had installed already, and the packages it says I didn't have installed, and that didn't give me an option for. I then fired up vt2 and got in root and ran swaret --install missing-package.

I think I had about 10 all together missing that I needed for gnome to be complete, some consisting of libs even.

I had problems too after upgrading...
So I removed gnome and XFree, installed Dropline Gnome, reinstall NVIDIA drivers, run xorgconfig and now everything's fine.

And someday Slack will have to use x.org, so why not use it now? =)

what's the big difference with dropline? I've read a million times that it's for 'slackware users,' but that could just mean it has slackware plastered all over the place..! Is there anything better/worse about it, really? Gnome 2.6 looks to be pretty nice with me so far.

And for me, it did. Thank you. I had been unable to come up with an answer before.
