suspending in slack

i have a few laptops with slack8 loaded. everything works great except that when they go into suspend they won't wake back up. i really can't figure out why, but it's getting rather annoying, because i have a laptop i use to play mp3s in my car, and the battery will sometimes die. and it's rather difficult having to wake it back up, then hard power it down and scan the discs when it boots back up..... while driving. :D

any suggestions are welcome. :-)

what bios are they using? i had a dell that would crash in suspend (pheonix bios), but my ecs does fine.

well, it's also happening on my IBM thinkpad. but it doesn't happen on my dell machine which runs redhat, so i know it has to be a problem with something slackware specific. probably apm settings, but i'm not sure.

A) Does the "no-wakey wakey" thing happen in and out of X?
B) What make and model of Thinkpad? Some BIOS just can't hack it.
C) No matter what its all kernel. I've had APM fights with most of the major distros and it was never anything a compile of a newer kernel (or older :) ) usually didn't fix. I use broad terms, there were a lot of laptops.
D) If it isn't in X, you may want to comment the setterm line out of /etc/rc.d/rc.M and see what that does. The Thinkpad may be having a bad reaction to being told to screen blank and that's pretty Slack specific.

I had a similar problem with my Thinkpad T21.
The solution is simple: It is a bug in the bios.

You'll have to recompile your kernel, and in section "General Setup" you have to enable "Advanced PowAdvanced Power Management BIOS support", and (that's the important one:)
"Use real mode APM BIOS call to power off".
I also enablede "Enable console blanking using APM", "Enable PM at boot time" and "Make CPU Idle calls when idle", but you don't need them necessarily (even though you might want them whenever working on battery on the console...).

...ahhh and then, if the keystroke won't work (e. g. on the Thinkpad Fn+F4) aou'll have to use

apm -s

to get it into standby.
You'll have to SUID root apmd and associated binaries in order to be able to do that as normal user...

Cheers!
