Perhaps I put it too strong. :)
Anyway, here in the Netherlands (and I'm quite positive that it's the same in a lot of other countries) Visa/Master cards are *not* the norm (far from it).

Global economic issues aside, does anyone know why the DVD edition costs more than the CD version?

Naturally the cost of CD media is less than DVD, but the CD set consists of 6 discs in a special case. Certainly the cost of DVD media is less than all that? There is no way the production costs of the DVD edition are that much higher than the CD edition.

I would like to get the DVD edition this time around (I have always gotten the CD set) but I can't help but feel foolish paying $10 more for less content. Of course it is just an illusion, as I am getting the same thing simply in a different form factor, but I just can't shake the notion.

I know that the intentions are good, but I think we need to respect those that can't afford or choose not to buy Slackware, regardless of the reason. If PV wants, he can always eliminate the free download option (or offer paypal, though I believe there is a reason behind this). Until then, everyone needs to accept that there will be people who will opt for the "free as in beer" option and that they have every right to do so. I do not believe we have the right to judge anyone for making that choice.

I know that the intent here was not to judge. It may not translate that way for all folks.

If you feel that strongly that something needs to be said, then say it in your sig.

My 2 cents. Again, no disrespect to anyone taking part in this thread.

Good points all:-) That is why in my initial post I said please consider making a donation. I don't have a problem with anyone downloading Slackware for free. I've downloaded Slack for free since 10.0:-) It is merely a friendly suggestion and in no way should you or anyone else feel uncomfortable about downloading Slackware. I'm sorry my post made you feel uncomfortable. I completely support the notion of free as in beer software.
I just wanted to support Pat and I wanted to share that idea with others here at LQ.

Please don't feel you need to apologize - that was not my intent. There is a difference between being uncomfortable a being offended and I was not offended. I agree that one should support whatever cause or endeavor one subscribes to in whatever way one feels they can or should. That is a personal choice however and one that should be respected, even if not agreed with. That being said, there are those who seem to forget or do not know that this is someone's living and do need a reminded. I am certain you were addressing those who could and should, but don't.

My statement above, in retrospect, seems harsher than I intended. I think ...

"If you feel strongly that something needs to be said in this regard, a statement in our sigs might be a nice way to remind folks."

...would be more in line with my feelings on the subject.

Cheers :D

Interesting:-) I have no idea why it is more costly.

I love the way the CD case looks, very cool:-)

Heh-heh, yeah, I know what you mean. There is something comforting in the six CDs.....lots of good stuff in there:-)
